It would appear that th OP is not using TT for internet, or he would know if it was good/bad.
Or he is 12 and just got his first PS3.
12 year olds are happy, more likely to be a teenager.

what there is such a thing as 'not terrible' tt broadband? especially if you should have any problems with it wink

That's because TalkTalk's actual broadband (LLU flavour) works the way it should, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. However if a not-very-technically-minded talktalk customer is getting frequent disconnections (eg due to his poor wiring) and the telephone support team is unable to help then of course the customer will be screaming expletives and saying the actual broadband network is <insert expletive>. If talktalk customers stick to web support they'll have absolutely no problems. Unfortunately any company which offers £3.49pm broadband is never ever going to provide the same level of phone support as a top end isp such as AAISP.

True to a point. However, my girlfriend was on Talk Talk Plus or whatever it is called nowadays and it was always going down - usually 3 to 4 times a day. Support was utterly useless as I am the technical one. I advised her to change over to sky which works out CHEAPER for the unlimited option and guess what? For the two months it has been active not a SINGLE moment of downtime and no need to call support, and also slightly faster from about 4.5Meg to 5.5Meg.

It could have been to be honest that the router was faulty but would you spend money on another router to ascertain this?

It may well be she is unlucky but I have heard other people around here having the same issues. However, I do agree Talk Talk cannot be THAT bad in most areas or nobody would be on it! It could literally be the luck of the draw smile

If you register on the TT members forum you can ask for a replacement router if you are in contract, this happened to me a while ago and i got one with no problems at all.

This is the joys of routers, same line and a few routers under review at present

1. My usual one is rock solid
2. Another great speeds but less stable, but has lots of tweaking options
3. Another that seems to not as stable as first one, but better than second.

So even with the same line and same ISP you can get varying performance from hardware. So while changing providers can be a solution, it is worth looking at hardware options, or improving line performance, particularly where someone may be locked into a contract.

The TalkTalk Huawei modems do seem to hang onto a line down to very low margins, with throughput suffering, i.e. pro-active restarts can improve things as can switching between ADSL modes manually.

Indeed.

The sky routers are particularly pants. Their 'range' has improved but to get a good range in Merthyr, I connect my D-Link router (I forget the model now) and statically assigned the ip to allow that to be a wireless bridge. This gives a greater range - in fact it used to allow a neighbour two doors down to use it when their phone line was down smile

I am thinking of using it directly to replace the sky router but I know that is 'not permitted' - I get 12meg down and 1.1up in Merthyr so I cannot really complain - except I cannot get FTTC frown

I found keeping your phone line and broadband apart from your sky satellite subscription puts you in a position where you can get your satellite for half price with out really haggling .

Its very difficult to negotiate a deal on your satellite subscription , when you cant just leave as your phone and broadband are tied to Sky also .

So it worked out cheaper for me having my broadband and phone with TalkTalk . Allot cheaper as i now have my Sky on a 75% discount for a year .
