McM - "My two immediate neighbours both use Plusnet and neither have the problems experienced by your son." Jolly good. Without a lot more information I'm afraid that post is of minor interest. No more so than your post which is more a technical problem about the particular router used by your son than about an ISP. At least he had the sense to change his router to one that met his requirements.

McM - "My two immediate neighbours both use Plusnet and neither have the problems experienced by your son." Jolly good. Without a lot more information I'm afraid that post is of minor interest. I assume you do not visit the PN forum. This is an issue of provision of faulty goods for some customers, and a heck of a long time sorting it out!
I don't think you can describe them as faulty goods, just not very good. Just about all ISP supplied routers are to a varying degree a piece of *$%&. If you want something decent that is properly supported you need to splash the cash and buy something better quality.

Actually, MCM, if you were aware of the issues with the PN router, you would recognise the value in alerting prospective customers, especially since "the particular router used by your son" is the one those customers will receive, and pay for. The news of your "two immediate neighbours" is indeed good news, but we have no idea which router they are using!!

You appear to have difficulty in understanding or accepting that not everyone is experiencing the problems your son experienced. Property sizes vary, numbers and makes of connecting devices differ, proximity and number of neighbours vary, etc., etc. and once again I repeat that neither of my neighbours are experiencing problems. ISPs have no control whatsoever of the environment in which their equipment is going to be used.

jab - we obviously have a different interpretation of 'faulty'? The router is sold to work on two wifi bands. It doesn't?

MCM - my last comment to you is that it looks as if we are both having difficulty understanding.

Mike - why do you assume he wants 'the latest BT kit'??!! Not my assumption, merely a comment. "the particular router used by your son" is the one those customers will receive, and pay for. The router is sold to work on two wifi bands. It doesn't? Plusnet is a 'cheap and cheerful' ISP which has given me excellent service, not one dropout in five and a half years. Its routers are not 'sold', like other ISPs they come as part of the BB service, like the email facility which is rubbish. If you want something better then pay extra for it. PN has its faults (starting with its horrendous accounts system) but I think it's unfair to expect any ISP's basic router to return five-star performance, they meet the needs of tens of thousands of customers.

I am probably 'senior' to you on PN service! I also have few issues (apart from 'customer service') - by the way I use my own router. To suggest that the PN router is not 'sold' as part of the package and is therefore a 'gift' from PN is ludicrous, MWM - as it is with all ISPs.
The problem here is not the lack of a '5-star' router. It is the 2-star router that PN need to sort out. Folk like Bob say are trying, but it should have been sorted now, after 9 or so months. It should work on both wifi bands.
I would not have 'recommended' PN to my son had I been aware of the situation with their routers.

You clearly have a problem rather than your son and seemingly fail to understand the vagaries of wi-fi and the effect of its location and the devices to be connected. If a user, any user, wants better performance than that offered by an ISP supplied router/modem/switch/access point the solution is simple - they should put their hand in their pocket and purchase equipment that meets their requirements or move to another ISP. PlusNet cannot be responsible for the environment in which their equipment is used.

Oh dear! "You clearly have a problem rather than your son" - no - if you could take a moment to read the thread it is my son that has the problem, and your subsequent comments would be answered by the same action by you.
