Re: Plusnet 'bog standard' router - wifi

The problem here is not the lack of a '5-star' router. It is the 2-star router that PN need to sort out. Folk like Bob say are trying, but it should have been sorted now, after 9 or so months. It should work on both wifi bands.

I would not have 'recommended' PN to my son had I been aware of the situation with their routers.

If you want a 5* WiFi/Router setup then it is going to cost way more than any ISP provided router from any consumer ISP. It is simply way to expensive to be effectively given away for the cost of postage which is what happens with PlusNet. Personally I didn't want to pay PlusNet for the postage on something I was not going to use as it's basically garbage IMHO so they didn't provide me with one at all.

I would argue (and most people in the know would agree) that no ISP provided router provides 5* WiFi, unless you are paying extra for a mesh solution from the ISP. However renting a mesh solution from an ISP is very poor value for money, as it will start costing you more than buying it outright yourself in a year or so.

The only two issues I have had with PlusNet in the last 15 years was when they got rid of the 40/10 option they put my mother on 40/2 despite me ringing up and switching to 80/20. Took me a good few months to figure out what was going on, but i got a refund on the excess she had been paying. The other issue was with my sister when she moved house last year, they where going to charge a silly amount, so she just cancelled and my brother in law opened up a new account for a fraction of the price at the new property. It was still in her maiden name too, probably cost PlusNet more than moving the line in the end.

Oh dear! "You clearly have a problem rather than your son" - no - if you could take a moment to read the thread it is my son that has the problem, and your subsequent comments would be answered by the same action by you.
It's clear to all that it is yourself that has the problem in that you seem to be either ignorant of or fail to understand the vagaries of wi-fi. Your son has done the sensible thing and changed his router whereas you continue to blame PlusNet for the problems your son experienced whilst totally failing to acknowledge that neither PlusNet nor any other ISP for that matter has any control over the circumstances or locations their equipment will be used.

Edit: Addition of the omitted words "fail to"

It appears that the pressure is mounting on PN to sort the router issue out. We may be returning the 'issue' router at PN's request. I will report back if any progress. Meantime caveat emptor.

PS Wish I had bought shares in Specsavers.....

*ALL* ISP routers that you get for the cost of postage are varying degrees of junk. Inthe past there have been severe issues with BT ones, and from recollection TalkTalk too.

Take a look at the price of "enterprise" WiFi equipment. Now ask yourself how you expect to get the same level of performance out of a router that somehow had to be paid for out of 12 months of ISP subscription. If you think it is possible then I have a bridge to sell you.

Strangely, I don't see any "enterprise" wifi kit at top of the router charts on SNB:

Why do you think that is? wink

Because nobody has benchmarked them by the looks of it. Least I can't see a benchmark for my Ubiquiti WiFi access point, yet I know I can get better throughput that more than half of the top ten, and besides throughput is not the only measure I would consider to be important. A single that does not drop and longevity of security updates being two other important considerations.

Oh and none of those models are ISP provided pieces of junk either.

jab - you and others here are missing the point by miles! It is not 'stellar' performance I expect. It is not '5-star' routers - the facts are that the provided PN router DOES NOT WORK. That is what this is about. Does that matter or should we just shrug our shoulders?

the wifi connection with LOS fading at 10- 15ft
Hi Mike

Although I agree with others that ISP's do not provide the best routers and to get something that performs better people normally buy one else where, having said all that an ISP router should be fit for purpose and if the wifi connection is being lost within 15ft (with line of sight) then you do have to question is it fit for purpose.

the facts are that the provided PN router DOES NOT WORK.
That simply UNTRUE. What is however true is that it does not meet your son's requirements.
