Re: Plusnet 'bog standard' router - wifi

the facts are that the provided PN router DOES NOT WORK.
That simply UNTRUE. What is however true is that it does not meet your son's requirements.

If the wi fi connection is being lost within 15ft (with line of sight) then surely the router is not working properly whatever his sons requirements are.

*ALL* ISP routers that you get for the cost of postage are varying degrees of junk. Inthe past there have been severe issues with BT ones, and from recollection TalkTalk too.

I can honestly say that the new and free TalkTalk hub is the best router i have ever had for WiFi speed and signal strength.

That's the point I was making.

if the wifi connection is being lost within 15ft (with line of sight) then you do have to question is it fit for purpose.
Can't speak for every house but in mine the lounge is longer than 15ft meaning I would lose wifi just by having the router at one end of the room and me siting at the other end. Sure that isn't acceptable to anyone.

Even Plusnet have admitted there's an issue with the 5ghz band on their Hub One router:

But is that the case for all current PN routers since neither of my two immediate neighbours are experiencing problems with their wi-fi. It could well be that the OP's son has a defective router that exacerbates the problem.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head.

The Plusnet Forum is still abuzz with problems with the wifi performance of the 'standard' router and on-going promises of it being sorted. What is interesting is the 'news' that PN are 'returning' to the BT fold with multiple job and management changes.

Son's old BTHUB5 is still 'doing the biz' ok and PN have offered for him to return the PN one.

Will that mean higher monthly costs and tighter usage limits?

Are you allowed to leave without penalty?

We wait with interest! The CEO, Andy Baker, is leaving and reportedly his post disestablished.

If you search a little further on the PN forum you will find an excellent guide to using the BT HH6 on PN. There are plenty of these on Gumtree for £10 to £25, some in original boxes. I paid £10 for mine and find the wifi coverage about 20% better, but PN, BT, nor expensive Billion router can penetrate our stone walls so we have a Devolo extender performing well for the past six years. Hope your son gets his problem sorted out.
