Glorious Virgin speeds (note: sarcastic remark)

[link to this post]

Lo all

Was just curious about starting a thread where folks can post their actual speed to this site and the details of where in general they are and what service they have signed up for. May as well start an unofficial ad campaign for ISPs where the users can post their _actual_ speeds rather than the attractive ones they post on the TV.

I'll start off

Location : Lanarkshire
Paid for speed : XL"up to 20mb"

Date 09/07/07 18:06:34
Speed Down 644.62 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Speed Up 21.96 Kbps ( 0 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/11840006598891514592.html

Well I suppose 0.6Mbps is still within the "up to" 20Mbps remit . Great thing is that if I want to complain it'll cost me 25p a min. . .

that connections totally screwed up and the reason for such diabolical download speed is obviously something to do with the fact that you appear to only have a 20k upload speed! not 768k as it should be, your download speed is about the maximum you can achieve with such a pathetic upload speed, I suggest you start looking into your computer to find out whats using all that upstream bandwith then you will find this rectifies your download speed problem. usually 100% of customer that report 'genuine' speed issues still have 100% upload speed. with your connection only supplying 20k upload speed, id suggest your running a background app thats using all your bandwith..

Hi there

Know where you are coming from but have tried it from 3 different machines and the test was in the same ball park for each. I even tried removing the router and connecting a laptop directly to the modem, was just on the same speeds. I seriously keep track of my incoming and outgoing using SNMP reports and graph it all using MRTG and there is no constant background uploads or the like. As the laptop gave similar speeds to the 2 desktops when it was directly connected to the modem I dont think its my end. Machines have been scanned for viruses, spyware etc and have even done a complete reinstall on one of the desktops of late. Going to drop a line to the E-Mail help desk and see what they can do. Not going to give them 25p a min to be held on the line. Can still surf even though its not anything close to what I'm paying for, so will wait for a mail response.

To be fair if it changes I'll post the different speed results.

Id suggest you call technical support as your problem is not the normal, sounds like an engineers visit is required to check your modem / power levels, as a poor upstream is an indication of something other that ubr congestion.

Location: Swindon
Product: Up to 20MB

Date 10/07/07 01:47:50
Speed Down 13866.11 Kbps ( 13.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 719.30 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

To be fair though just before I did the speed test I was getting a better download speed than that from newsgroups using 20 connections, it tends to be a pretty steady 2.1x MB/s - 2.3x MB/s so I don't see the speed tests to be a good representation of what I can actually get

Usenet isn't only for downloading copywrite material so don't just assume that because someone is accessing it that they are doing so, although as you say it can be found there, for some of us it is a good resource for homebrew software and other such programs that are freely available with no copywrite behind it but unlike other sources it offers a far better connection. I don't want to get into a debate over it as it's totally OT but I don't appreciate the implication of copywrite theft
