50Mbit upload speed?

Hi folks,

I've just upgraded to Virgin 50Mbit broadband yesterday, I did a speedtest on Speedtest.net and it was coming out at about 48Mbit down but only about 0.75Mbit up.

I've tried it again today and I'm getting about 38Mbit down (I figure being a Saturday during the day it might be a busy period) and I'm still only getting 0.81Mbit up.

This is the speed test I've just done...

I was under the impression that it should be nearer 1.5Mbit up (I'm in an area which hasn't been upgraded). Plus is it correct that I didn't get supplied with a USB wireless adaptor?

If it helps I'm wired directly into the Super Hub and my connection speed is 1Gbit.

Ashford gives me awful results.

Try London, Newbury or Paris and post the results.

That's something completely different. The OP is posting as he's not getting his expected upload speeds from Speedtest.net, not that he's not received his upload increase.

If you have got the new superhub then there are a few settings that need to be disabled...

Hmm... not getting great upload speeds at the moment...

Here's one from the Paris server
...and the London server (faster download speed)
...and finally the Newbury server.

To be fair I've been at work all day and I don't know what the wife and kids have been doing with the connection (although we don't use any P2P and I don't think the wife has been uploading anything to Facebook etc). I will try tomorrow morning before I go to work if I can (about 7:30am) and see if it makes any difference, I'll also check out the router settings to see if I can find what needs tweaking.

Looks like I'm going to have to wait until July 2011 as I'm in the Newton Abbot area (well Torquay but it's classed as Newton Abbot).

Rob, you should look around on the Virgin Customer Forum to find out how to view & then post your modem's power levels. My guess is this is what's causing your upstream to be iffy.

When I was moved over from 20 -> 30 meg (which entails going from DOCSIS 2 -> DOCSIS 3), the engineer commented that the power levels were a little flaky, which was reflected in a speedtest getting only around 22 megs. After he fiddled around with some things it was a solid 31 / 3.1 result each time.

Raise a technical fault with VM, as the downstream power levels are under half of the recommended lowest downstream power of -3dBmV

Ahh not good. I did call earlier, got put through to the 50 Meg support team and they said they'd phone me back, suffice to say they didn't.

Okay, I had a 20 minute call with Virgin tech support. They connected into the Super Hub remotely and changed some of the settings, they managed to get the upload speed up to 0.90Mbit but the download speed was running at about 12Mbit (the slowest it was running at was 5Mbit and the fastest about 32Mbit).

They said to leave it 24 hours for it to settle down.

I then asked if it was possible to get a separate modem & router as the port forwarding was still working (they only support Outlook Express, and they didn't seem to understand what port forwrading or DMZ was). They advised to phone Customer Services.

So I phoned Customer Services, spoke to someone who said they could only downgrade me to 30Mbit as they no longer supply the separate modem/router.

I explained that I was getting better service at 20Mbit and that if that's all they could do then I would cancel and go elsewhere (since I'm in my 14 day cooling off period). They then put me through to another Customer Services department (a UK one this time). I explained the situation to the guy I spoke to, he asked if I still had the existing modem, I told him that the Engineer had taken it away and that I had the Netgear 54G modem so the guy at Virgin advised that he would send out a new modem for the 50Mbit service and a D-Link Wireless N router, so finally a result.

I wonder if they are maybe running out of these modems now they have the Super Hub?

I'll update everyone when I receive the new kit in 3 to 5 days

Okay, scrap that, they just phoned me back and they can't supply anything other than the Super Hub!

My only other option is to go back to 20Mbit... seriously considering it now.

Since your power levels are clearly wrong, you should request that they send an engineer out to tinker at the cabinet. If you mention that you're considering leaving due to it, that might make them shake a leg about it.

When I was upgraded to 30 meg we did a speed test and only got around 22mb. the engineer noted the power levels were a little iffy, he went off to the cabinet and came back around 20 mins later, after which I got ~32/3.2 on speedtest.net.

I guess there's only so much they can do remotely.
