Installation Problem

[link to this post]

Last week I stepped up from VirginNet and dialup to VirginMedia on cable. On advice I waited three hours before attempting to install software from the CDROM. Having supplied all the necessary input data and attached the Ethernet modem as prompted, I received an on-screen error message 206. No assistance as to what error code 206 meant.

Dialling the number 0845 454 1111 as quoted in the supplied leaflet and waiting for many, many minutes, I explained my problem and asked for the meaning of error code 206. I was advised to ring 0906 301 2222.

Again a wait of several minutes and again I was given another number to telephone 0871 225 111. Remember this is not an existing customer with a technical problem, it is a new customer attempting to install a paid-for package.

I was never told what error code 206 actually meant, but was talked through another installation method which involved opening my browser and inputting a series of codes in the URL box. After several stages of procedure my account had successfully installed.

My concern is what will happen when and if, I do a reformat and clean installation on the same computer. Can someone please give me the stepped procedure for installation using a browser? In my loss of composure I omitted to copy down the various steps.

I have written to Virgin Sales Support in Nottingham but there is a deafening silence ....

If this is a common problem why do people have to call a 1 per minute or any other premium rate line just to get it fixed? Especially as they are new users in this instance.

If the error code 206 is an issue with the registration, is that at the end users end or the ISP's? if its the ISP's and its a common issue, could this be a con just for the end user to call the premium rate lines?

Hi djinn

That is precisely the information that I was looking for. Also good to know that I won't have the problem again when I house clean. Mind at ease. Big grin.

Thanks for Simon' s explanation.

But, if VM changes the cable modem, the re-installation is useless. Because the new cable modem's MAC address is not recognized in Virgin Media's system, the user has to call the phone (09062121111) to tell the engineer about the new MAC address. Of course, the user can ask VM to refund it.

It looks that the VM doesn't provide an easy way for the user to install the cable modem. In fact, the new MAC address should input into their system before delivery. Or, when the VM's engineers change the modem, they need to contact their colleagues to change the MAC address. That's why there are lot of complaints for the service.

Regards,
Jackie

I have just sorted my dad out for Virgin Broaband, and the software would not work due to an issue with Vista. Rang customer support and was told to ring another number 6 times (aarrgghh)no one wanted to attempt to sort the issue they kept telling me I had got the wrong department. Eventually got hold of some one who knew what they were doing and it was an easy process.

The next day my dad rang in to complain about the terrible service and why they had supplied in their words software that would not work with Vista.

In the end they refunded all the call costs for that day

Cheers
