Getting 10Mbps or less?

We're looking for a case study for a newspaper who are looking into virgin users who are regularly averaging less than half the speed they should be on the 20Mbps Virgin Cable product..

If you are getting less than 10Mbps, are willing to take part and happy to have your photo in the newspaper, it will involve talking to them about your experiences and also having a photographer come round. Which newspaper? It's important info. I'm not eligible, my speeds are fine, but I wouldn't want anything to do with certain rags.

This seems like the newspaper in question is just out to spoil Virgin Media's party after releasing the 50mb product by damming the other products they offer.

When you say less than 10mb is this during the morning, afternoon and evening? Or at peak time? Which then surely would be a bad time to take the results from?

Where would this 10mb to gained from? Downloading a file, or running a speed test? What happens if the server in question couldn't cope with the 20mb connection and this was the reason 10mb or less was being achieved? I hope this is all going to be portrayed in the article or it's going to be very one sided and factually wrong.

Agree with you completely.

It would be a lot fairer (and more interesting to VM users) for the newspaper to research XL and L speeds AFTER the implementation of docsis3.

Thankfully I've not seen less than contracted speeds (except the 3 times I've been STM'd) so that counts me out.

If the newspaper concerned accesses the virginmedia.support.broadband,cable Newsgroup, not only would they see the sort of issues (SOME - edit) XL users are experiencing, they could contact the real persons concerned through use of the exposed real e-mail address at the top of the post.

From what I have seen locally it is XL users rather than L and S users who suffer the biggest hits

The newspaper need also focus on the state of Virgin Media green cabinets which may be a contributory factor over and above the high TX loads on the UBR's serving the blighted areas. In connection with this, a good investigative journalist would find out why these boxes are opened up.

PS> If you value your privacy and post on the mentioned newsgroup, create an alias e-mail address for the post and disable this after posting, re-enable just when needed - not a perfect solution but guards against harvesting.

I think they are looking for average kinda speeds that are poor. They're not looking to bad mouth, just trying to evaluate if there are likely to be similar problems on the 50meg product once it gets over the honey-moon period. Is it actually a step change in the way forward.

Seems a worthy investigation. This could answer some of my unanswered questions.

Docsis 3.0 runs over existing physical infrastructure which appears to be saturated in some areas.

The DOCSIS 3 logical network however is not saturated as there's no-one on it. The space for it on the physical network was freed up through elimination of some analogue or utilisation of spare capacity.
