BT Phone line required?

[link to this post]

I'm thinking about ordering a bundle package from Virgin, consisting of the upto 50Mb cable service and the basic M+ TV package. If I take up the virgin phone service, I get the first 2 months of the package for free, which would save me around £90. Having the virgin phone service only costs an extra £1 per month. So it's worth me having the phone service just to get the 2 free months.

However, when I add the bundle to the basket on virgins website and enter my post code, it says I need: "Your BT account details. If you've ordered our phone service, you can normally keep your current home phone number, if you'd like to."

There is no BT line here and I don't want to get one installed. I thought Virgins phone service worked through cable? Could someone please confirm this?

If a BT phone line is required, I wont take up this offer.

"Your BT account details. If you've ordered our phone service, you can normally keep your current home phone number, if you'd like to."

You can read right?

Its asking for your BT account details so you can keep your BT number but since you dont have a bt line you just leave this bit alone.

The way I understand this paragraph is that you are required to have a BT phone line but you can also keep your current phone number if you like.

Don't worry about it. smile How are you finding the 50Mb service? We've ordered the bundle today but we've got to wait until the 6th of March before the engineer can come and install it!

I'm hoping to get some sort of QOS set up, either with the default 'N' router (which I believe is a DLink DIR-615) or with a Linksys that I have tucked away in a box somewhere. There are 4 of us sharing this house, and we all have a laptop/PC.

50MB service is "ok"

I have been suffering from some speed issues witch are now getting better. And im starting to see downloads hit 6mb a sec as they should on 50mb.

The DIR 615 Has a QOS service but its set around online gaming so other things dont chew up the bandwidth if your in a game. How it knows if your in a game tho i dont know.

I have 2 PC's and a laptop here but only when i have friends round do they all get used at the same time, but even then the 50mb connection handles it fine smile

I know the 50Mb service says there's no traffic management, but with all the clauses about maintaining network performance and the potential for congestion, I'm guessing the speeds can sometimes drop at busy times. I'd be curious to know if it's possible to find out more about the cable in my area and the status of the UBR/Virgin equipment.

So the DIR-615 can't really do any configurable QOS? I'm guessing it just recognises common online gaming port numbers or games console MAC's. The Linksys router I have (can't recall the model number right now) does more advanced QOS where you can configure services by port numbers. I plan to prioritise DNS and HTML traffic, so that web browsing will always be snappy, even when other members of the household are downloading and maxing out the download and/or upload bandwidth. It's only a 'g' wireless router and it has a built in ADSL modem - I'm hoping this can by by-passed.

Still can't believe I have to wait until March 6th for the engineer though frown

Being an ADSL router the QoS is going to want to work over the ADSL connection.. Not sure if it can be changed tho frown

Im looking into the DIR 615 to see if i can flash it with different firmware that has better qos options.
