Does anyone know if VM's DNS servers went down at around 00:30 UK time or was it just me.
194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 couldnt be pinged even after restarting dns service. however it was still possible to surf via IP address and using google as a backup 8.8.8.8 allowed me back online.
just curious

There were a few problems last night so it seems so these could have be affected

They're constantly having DNS problems, it drops out all the time... rebooting helps, but it's their issue as far as I can tell, nothing changed at this end from the time it's working perfectly (usually middle of the night, naturally!)

You could always do what I do and not use VM's DNS servers. From day one I noticed DNS problems on my virgin line so I set the DNS on the netgear router they supplied to use OpenDNS's servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) and then never had a DNS issue since

now for me its completely different.
I dont seem to get issues on VM DNS servers but if i switch to OpenDNS my connection goes really slow at night and when i switch back to VM all is well again.

hmm thats odd my DNS with them is always quite zippy, but like the original poster I had poor responses from the VM DSN servers, maybe worth trying google's free DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

You could always give namebench a spin - it will tell you which DNS servers are fastest for you (at the time of the test obviously). Whenever I've checked it's always google or opendns that come out fastest.

I now have VM, openDNS, Google and BT all set up with google being top of the pile and BT at the bottom.
Just a quickie, but if you want more than the standard 2 dns addresses just go to the tcp/ipv4 properties where you can add manual IPs and click the advanced button. window changes. click on dns then add as many dns addresses as you like.
and namebench is definately useful. it gave me a lot of help

something called Ultra DNS is best for me apparently.

They do vary so you need to check a few times.
When I tried it again yesterday (first time in ages) on a vodafone mobile bb it came up with a BT one and then from home it was a different BT server. I would only use genuine open servers as ISPs could at some point close down open access I think.
Anyway I settled on Google as the OpenDNS defaults don't suit me (I don't want redirecting if there is a 404 and I don't want nanny censorship - they were actually blocking one of my own sites for some unknown reason the gits) and I can't override them on vodafone as they use NAT so you can't set up an individual account.
