Virgin Media Installation query

I'm considering ordering the 50 Mb Virgin Broadband package, leaving o2 to do so.

I have a query about how they get the fibre into the home. Do the installation team always dig up part of the front garden in order to lay the cable, or are alternatives available, such as having a small box attached to the insider of the garden wall, and cabling running around the edge of the garden?

It's coax not fibre.

They'll usually do what you ask unless it involves a lot more materials or time than the standard job (whatever that may be) for your type of property. The coax comes out of the ducting to a junction box on your house wall and from there to another box inside.

As far as it goes around here I don't ever recall seeing a virgin install except laying around someones garden, if they ever bury it love to know where

Mine does round the wall but burying it would involve lifting block paving.

My son's is buried - mind you they'd have a problem fixing it to a wall as they'd have to build one first

Mine (cable in green trunking) was put into a shallow trench which they dug along the side of the garden. I've seen a couple of recent ones where they've just left the trunking on top of the garden or attached to a wooden fence.

I am thinking about getting Virgin Media Broadband and have same concerns about how they get the cable from the pavement to the house.

Front garden is mainly block paved and I certainly don't want a cable in trunking just lying across the front garden. The might be an opportunity to dig up about a metre of block paving and then tack the cable to a brick wall the rest of the way but not sure how far they will go to make sure the cable is hidden.

Is there anyway to get an engineer out before placing an order to discuss how they would be able to get the cable to the house beforehand?

On properties without a tube already (most do in VM cabled streets), then usually a survey (i.e. one man visits), if they think it will cost them more than £300 in time/labour/material they refuse the install.
