Fair enough so long as those high speed users aren't hammering it but a brief look at forums suggests plenty are - maybe it's only the cheapskates who do as tbh I can't see how anybody could consume the amount of data a 120Mbps downstream could deliver.

Well from memory that 8Mbs can do ~ 3TB I'd estimate 4TB would be 24x7 on about 10Mbps so only 2.4x7 on 100 and you've already said you avoid peak times so that, while pretty huge, is imo sustainable unless you are joined by several others on the same segment at the same times. The real killer is 24x7 seeding of torrents and I bet quite a few do that even if only through ignorance.

There aren't all that many 120Mb users, however a good part of them are indeed on the 120Mb service because, while they're happy to pay for newsgroup access and 120Mb, they aren't so happy paying for the content they consume.

There'll be the odd one who downloads catch-up TV, uses it for backups and other IT-heavy operations working from home or simply has it because it came as part of a bundle or even because they measure their manhood via the bandwidth of their connection but for sure for the most part it's people downloading Blu Ray images.

Either way their call. Up to copyright owners to enforce said copyrights on their content.

The premise that there are 24 hours in a weekend and 17 hours in a day in "VM World" during which one can have unlimited should be enough for most and even though I could use as much as they are prepared to sell me, I keep usage low in the evening etc.

The issue I have just now is that every man and his dog hits things at 11pm. I have found that at 11pm there is a period of maybe 2 hours in which this 100Mb connection can be as low as 5 to 8Mb.

I am certainly looking forward to getting upgraded....here we must be among the last to get the bandwidth....as usual.

I agree with you for what its worth.

Whilst I accept ignition's point, the problem is there is no real plan B for when lots of people do go full throttle 24/7 on a single service group. To make matters worse this sort of thing when it happens tends to be localised, like one area might have 20 heavy torrenters another area might have none or 1. I dont think heavy users are evenly spread out across nodes.

I think one reason things have improved lately (asides from the abandoning of 10:1 on lower packages) is that as speeds go up, its harder to sustain full throttle for long periods of time. So ultimately less people will be going 100%. So internet speeds outgrowing the download addicts. Right now the maths are better. max 120mbit on a 400mbit group and max 12mbit upload with 36 capacity. When previously we had max of 100mbit down on 200 capacity and max 10 up on 18 capacity.
