What am I looking for?

[link to this post]

Hi,

Apologies for the newbie post. Not sure what good looks like? Does someone have an example of what a graph should look like?

Here is mine :

Is this normal?

Wifi isn't great, but it is okay. Get regular good speeds, but with the odd drop out. Range seems to be the main issue, but we all know the myriad of factors that can cause that !

Thanks.

Steve.

Looks typical VIRGIN, hight latency spikes.

As you said, you really need a direct cable connection to the hub, for a more accurate picture.

This is what a good BQM should look like:

This is what a good VM connection looks like.

Other days don't look quite so good.

Mine isn't bad at the moment, see the link in the sig. (auto update).

I'm on the Surrey/Hampshire border area, which is connected back to Guildford head-end. Each regional area can be different.

The ping box will be pinging the public IP which is hosted by the Virgin Superhub so wifi does not come into it.

If between 9am and 11:30am you were downloading or uploading over your connection then that jump in those times is normal.

Otherwise the general yellow zone is fairly normal for Virgin Media, the service does have more jitter than other services.

The block of red was either an outage or the hub stopped responding for a while which they do randomly

I concur.......but, if cable connected a much faster download will be achieved, which on the Virgin network usually shows greater latency.

It is easy to spot when intense streaming is taking place.

If you have Virgin's 200 Mbps service, you can easily get WiFi that can meet that.

The point is that if you are using the connection, e.g. large downloads, (maxing out speeds, such as these tens of GB game downloads) - then the latency will increase on the BQM, because the connection is in use. That isn't a rating of the quality of the connection.

The BQM is most useful when the connection is NOT in use.
