I would suggest that Virgin Media are not selling an enterprise service

Obviously they are not. But with every router available to endusers able to work with the full range of LAN IPs under rfc1918, there is no good reason for VM not to do the same or supply a modem instead. Why do people like to give cover to companies providing second rate service?

VM do provide a "modem mode" for the DOCSIS Hubs for users to provide their own Routers, except for the Nexfibre areas which utilise the Hub 5x. This Hub has no modem mode, and looks as if it never will.
As for "giving cover" in many cases, it's all there is for a decent broadband speed. Up until a couple of years ago or so, VM was my only choice until Openreach came along. So it was take it or leave it, not that I was praising VM by any means.

I would have to check my Hub 3, but I don't "give cover" I have the only high speed service available to me in my road (and no, I can't have starlink or sky dishes). I found the Hub 3 under spec anyway, WiFi 5 and limited options, can't be pinged (e.g. thinkbroadband BQM).

It is likely worth writing (politely!!) to the CEO and ask if they have any plans to improve the firmware to be more flexible.

But I'm very sure this is done to reduce helpdesk calls.

The lack of modem mode on the Nexfibre area 5x units is deplorable, and needs to be escalated. But in Nexfibre areas just go with GiffGaff as they provide a normal ONT and you can use any ethernet attached router. The workaround for 5x users is to use the DMZ mode to an external router.
