Hi folks
I'm hoping someone can help me understand the terminology and setup around VOIP (specifically "SIP") and how I might potentially be able to make use of Sipgate Basic, Asterisk and my Gigaset N300 unit.
I already have the Sipgate Basic account, and the N300 is connected to it. That's all good.
However, I was hoping for more advanced features (such as do not disturb times, do not disturb times and better blacklists etc.). I know that Sipgate allows you to add numbers to block lists, but that's about it.
I've then learned about Asterisk, and have a spare Raspberry Pi3 kicking around so I've installed it using the RasPbx project (http://www.raspberry-asterisk.org)
However, I'm at a loss as to what to do next with it.
Does anyone use this and can recommend how best to use it?
Thanks in advance

Asterisk is indeed very flexible and powerful but as with all good tools, there is some learning to be had. Its been a few years since I've used it in anger, but FreePBX is/was quite a good distro with a fairly large well established community forum. Might be worth some exploration.

FreePBX basically puts a web front end to setup and administer asterisk. Asterisk is a full blown software PBX. You can do some crazy stuff with it. I hacked mine to run native video calling, amongst other stuff, over Cisco 9971 desk phones, that was 2012/13 ish. Think you can find me over there as simcity. It’s been a few years since I posted in anger.

Yeah, it looks pretty powerful with a number of modules that look interesting.
Part of the problem for me is the terminology and working out what goes together (“SIP Trunk” for example)…I just need to find the right source and spend time reading up and practicing.
Though I need to concentrate on actually migrating the landline to Sipgate really (after the FTTP is installed at the end of the week)

You can use your sip extension details as the SIP Trunk
Thanks

Indeed so, and the single SIP registration over the SIP trunk means multiple, simultaneous calls are then possible over the 'trunk'

Thanks Dan, I can see that Sipgate provide a really helpful guide for the FreePBX setup here:
https://teamhelp.sipgate.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/115...
The bit I'm missing is...what details would I put into my Gigaset N300 to point to the FreePBX install?
I presumably need to work out what the PBX settings are for the local PBX server and apply them on there.
I will dig into that at the weekend!

You need to setup extensions and at least inbound routes and outbound routes.
The N300A is then signed in as as extension on FreePBX/Asterisk

Thanks Pheasant, I'll read more at the weekend and see what I can achieve

I had some background/experience in enterprise comms/voice so the concepts to me were quite straightforward, but yes otherwise you will need to spend a bit of time getting familiar with the principles of a voice exchange; including trunks, endpoints/extensions, call routing, etc. It can be a whole other world. Fun though

Fun?! 😄
But seriously I do know what you mean though.
I’ve worked for 20 years in IT as support and then development and I still ove the little home projects and networking etc. Which can be pretty fun (when they work).

Resurrecting this thread to ask if you got anywhere with this? I signed up to Sipgate Basic, and while the wording in their documentation seems to suggest that you can hook in an instance of FreePBX/Asterisk using the Basic plan, the Trunk option is missing from the control panel. I tried following the guide anyway but can't seem to get it to register.
I don't know if I'm missing something with the incoming ports I've opened or if the account simply doesn't allow trunks to be registered...

Hi Noiz
I didn't pursue it to be honest, so can't really help, sorry.
The main reason was for call blocking / monitoring - but it seems we're getting so few spam calls that it's not necessary, plus the block list on Sipgate's site is easy to add numbers to.

That's a shame. I'm trying to do it for similar reasons, but I want to send spam calls straight to Lenny instead of block them entirely, and then have a good laugh at the recordings later.

You set it up from within FPBX/Asterisk as an trunk - same deets as per usual. You will need to configure inbound and outbound routes. Bit if a learning curve if you’re new to it all.
Have you setup Sipgate on a simple softphone first to check the deets?

I got it working in the end, following the guide here: https://www.ukvoipforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=58#p5737
Now I need to actually buy a phone to use with it.

Keep going it’s good fun! Took me a few months to hack about and patch Asterisk to do video calls using Cisco 9971 handsets. When I got it working it was a wow moment. That was 2012/13 though and those handsets seem a bit dated now.
Plenty of good SIP phones out there now for reasonable money.
Good luck.

The fun project aspect is the only reason I'm doing it really. Since switching to full fibre and finding that we no longer need a phone package just to get Internet my brain lit up with the possibilities of cheap/free SIP and FreePBX, most notably around Lenny seeing as 99.9% of all calls we ever got to our home phone before we unplugged it was spam. https://www.crosstalksolutions.com/howto-pwn-telemar...
My ultimate not-very-interesting-in-reality goal is to whitelist a few known numbers to directly ring a normal phone, so that we can get hold of the kids when they're home alone, and shunt everything else straight to Lenny. Maybe with a secret code to escape him and get through to the real phone...
I got the "shunt everything to Lenny" bit working last night, so stage 1 is complete.

I’ve been toying with the idea to build a fresh FPBX box. I have pretty much let the original slide into a deprecated state, so it’s not brilliant: CentOS 6, Asterisk 12! and FPBX is about four versions out of date now 🤣.
Hardware wise I’m now onto my second/spare (Foxconn mini) chassis and second SSD in 10 years. Triggers broom comes to mind. A fresh slate needed.
I have some ThinkCentre M720q tiny chassis that I think I will build a new box on…
