Replacing extra line with VOIP

We currently have two phone lines and I would like to get rid of the second one but keep the number and port it to a VOIP service. It won't be used all that much so I was thinking the cheapest way to do it would be to use SIPgate as they don't charge a monthly fee (I think).

I was going to buy an ATA from eBay and I wondered about the possibility of using the same SIP account from different ATAs. Is it possible to have two ATAs connected to the same SIP account? Would the phone ring at both locations for an incoming call? Could I make calls from both ATAs at the same time through the one SIP account? Presumably when I make a VOIP call to a UK landline number the caller ID at the recieving end will show my ported number?

multiple ATAs or softphones will indeed all respond to an incoming call. An ATA can fupply more than one phone via your extension wiring too (if relevant).

I don't know if sipgate presents CLID correctly TBH.

I see the correct CLID in both directions on my Sipgate account. You make a payment, min £10, and it just stays as credit until it runs out. Incoming calls are free anyway and outgoing are certainly cheaper for me as I'm using VirginMedia for landline and they are very expensive.

I have the VOIP set up on an ATA and on my mobile, I also have a softphone on the laptop which I can use with the account. An incoming call will signal all three devices, I've not tried it but you should, in theory, be able to make up to 3 outgoing calls at one time.

The only bit I'm not sure about it porting a number to Sipgate. I seem to remember they can, but there was a fee involved.

Yes, ported my VM number to Sipgate for about £20, I think.

According to the Sipgate web site number porting is not availale on the basic account. Shame as I was hoping to do that with one of my numbers.

Strange. Perhaps they have changed their rules recently?
