Google Apps

[link to this post]

I have a problem with Yahoogroups email being blocked by my domain email server, which is checked with Spamcop, which lists the mirade of Yahoo IPs. Some become delisted then promptly relisted.

Anyway, by hosters have suggested signing up to Google Apps, during which you add your domain name, personal details, when I got no further and chickened out when I read elsewhere it was irreversable.

Anyhow, my hosters said I would then need to change the MX record to point to Google Apps. This seems dangerous if I do it wrong. I'm told this will route mail through Google's servers, bypassing my hosters. But what I don't understand is can I carry on using my domain mail so in practice there is no change to Outlook setup and my use of the address with Yahoo Groups.

Anyone any experience with Google Apps? I want to try and get a handle on it before accepting or dismissing their advice.

Thanks

Yahoo groups are spam centeral, yahoo did not protect the average user from spam to be honest hence why your hosting company/spamcop has banned it .

Reading between the lines, you don't want to really use Google apps. That said you can divert your mx entry to any other mail server you wish to use.

The last option would be to change hosting company ..

Yes, thanks. I have even had Yahoogroups blocking my Yahoo address used for the group, or at least my own email back to me. Notification messages too (which is the issue with using my domain email for the group).

This hosting company is very good value (mail probs notwithstanding) so I'm reluctant to change for that reason.

I'm now using GAFYD (Google Apps) for two of my sites and they are absolutely amazing.

We currently host most most of our email servers with Fasthosts and we've had nothing but problems with them.

Google, other than being free if you have less than 50 email addresses, Google give you 8gb of space to store emails and you get to use the well known interface.

What done it for me was the ability to archive emails. On a number of occations, someone has sent me an email 5 mins before leaving work and if I forgot to forward it on to my email at home, I'd not be able to see it.

With Google's archiving facility, you can see ALL of the emails sent and received.

If my glowing review isn't enough, I am sure there are loads of people out there who will say the same thing.

Hope it goes well for you.

Hi,

I did sign up to GAFYD. Then because it seemed to be such a hell of a detailed setup, reading though their instructions, that I cancelled it! I don't rule out giving it another go though! And your recommendation might just tempt me again to persist rather than chicken out.

I use Outlook for my email (apart from Hotmail). Do you know whether I would need to change the POP and SMTP server addresses from that of my domain, to Google's? Or does the MX record change take care of that.

I have four email accounts set up on my domain. I understand that I'd have to set these up identically with Google too, but if I wanted to add further accounts would I also need to set them in both places?

Seems a hell of a lot of kerfuffle just to prevent the domains that Yahoo use being blocked by Spamcop according to whether on the blacklist or not. Did you have similar problems with Fasthosts blocking your email?

Thanks

You might think it is alot of work but in the long run, it really is worth it.

You will need to use GMails IMAP/POP/SMTP Servers but that's nothing major.

I have four email accounts set up on my domain. I understand that I'd have to set these up identically with Google too, but if I wanted to add further accounts would I also need to set them in both places?

You shouldn't need to create it in two places although I may be confused by what you mean.

If you decide to go down the Google Apps route, you will have to ditch the previous setup.

You can log on as the administrator or a user who has been given administrator access and create as many accounts as your account will allow. As a personal user, you can have up to 50 email accounts.

I went to Google Apps because I was paying over the odds for hosting when I was really only using it for my emails.

The company I now work at were using Fasthosts and were continuously experiencing poor service and I decided that all the pro's completely outweighed the con's and switched them over to Google Apps.

It's extremely simple to setup the MX records etc and Google give you step by step instructions on changing the DNS for most of the popular Domain Registrars.

If you need any help etc, please do not hesitate to ask.

Cheers

Thank you for the offer. I'll keep that in mind.

What I meant by creating new addresses in two places is would I need to go to cPanel to set a new email address, then set up the identical in Google Apps, but I think you answered that so didn't misundstand.

My hosters tell me that they use Google Apps for their internal email!
