Should i leave plus.net?

[link to this post]

Hi, Been with plusnet for a year and a bit now after finally migrating from tiscali when all the **** hit the fan with them! Service has been good but my girlfriends bt connection seems faster.

Anyway, Times change and have seen a few new ISP's about like be etc. Wondering if i can get a better deal/service as i should be able to migrate no problem.

Currently on Premier Option 1, syncing around 2700kbps, bras 2000kbps. Usage ranging from 10-20gb a month.

Should i stay or should i go?

There are many reasons besides choice of ISP why your girlfriends connection may seem faster.
Supply some general figures such as how much you're prepared to pay, what you want to use the connection for, if you require email etc and how much data you're likely to transfer on a monthly basis.
If you supply line stats etc we can project what connection speed you can expect.

I moved from PlusNet PAYG to Newnet Home S a few months ago - much better speeds, despite PlusNet's claims that the PAYG package was generally 'unshaped' in comparison with Premier.

Could just be her system is set up better, got less rubbish on, or she simply has a better line/vp at exchange.
You could get a better deal elsewhere, but what sort of downloading do you do ? p2p or newsgroups or are you simply into surf and email with the odd update download ?

Just webpages, Http files and sometimes torrents. Also use limewire sometimes.

Her system isnt better than mine, junked up packard bell.

She is closer to the exchange etc but just wondered if anyone else is better!

Raise a fault ticket with Plusnet. Their support people are helpfull enough.

Hi M, I'm an ex PlusNet user - I don't want to start a war here but after a year I really struggled to find a good reason to stay with PlusNet, and I had exactly the same issues as you. Hesitating on pages; sometimes lack of access and generally very poor internet viewing all round.

I am a light user so I had many options open to me and I choose NewNet - an instant difference; lost the stumbling; instant access to all sites viewed and the email even worked

I'm not suggesting it's all PlusNet fault but it doesn't help with their absolutely terrible customer service and lack of technical support - I would move on.

On the above mentioned: did you migrate in or were you a new connection? If the latter, you may be caught up in the five-year depreciation issue on connection and hardware!

Let us know.

Thanks - Blue

I don't think it applies to you, but if you were a new connection there is a condition that states there is a 5-year % drop charge for the hardware and deferred new connection fee, or something very similar - I believe a lot of people were not to impressed with this and it's been mentioned and fought over many times.

And the 5 year depreciation that you refer to is being amended to one year in the coming months.

Meaning that for anyone that remains with us for more than 12 months, all deferred charges will be waived upon migration/cancellation.

I appreciate that this has long been argued, partially down to many not understanding the terms when signing up.

Don't care! Doesn't concern me lol

Basically im looking to move to someone that's the same price/less with about 25gb a month limit.

Newnet seems good. Will see how long their contract is so i can escape if its pants!

What will happen when i migrate? i dont want to end up paying two isp's in one month!

I haven't read any complaints and by all means lots of praise for them. Personally I would have no hesitation in moving to any of the ISPs I listed above and all them do monthly contracts and no costs to think of.

Another option is Namesco but they do have a charge if you leave in the first 12 months (IIRC it is

I may be incorrect here but is there a potential LLU issue? If the OP has been placed on the Tiscali LLU via PlusNet would that not limit their options as who they could migrate to?

If so, M you need to ascertain if you are on IPStream or LLU - I guess PlusNet could answer that, but don't do anything yet as somebody else may correct me.

Thinking aloud, what about www.samknows.com Use that and hit Availability Checker and see what it states.

I also like Names but be aware of this from a previous post: If termination occurs within the first twelve (12) months from the commencement date, a termination fee of

I missed the fact that the OP might be on LLU. If they are then they should first look at the link in my signature to find a means for PN to move them back to BT IPStream for free and then request a MAC. Without doing that and migrating to another ISP would incur a cost of
