As of this momment Ukonline do not traffic shape or port throttle there customers but do have a FUP in there contract but will not say what the limit is..
From what i have seen other people say its pretty much unlimited with some people down loading 300gig a month with out any problems..
This might change at a latter date if there llu network starts to get over subscribed but as of this moment there is no restrictions..

DON'T TRUST UKONLINE PPL. THEY ARE MISS SELLING PRODUCTS!

@ woweebert

i'm not sure if its just llu you are on about but UKOnline are traffic shaping p2p to 50mbps and lower. after 30 mins of using a p2p app their traffic shaping cuts in. i was told by the sales rep that ukonline do not throttle or traffic shape. i have also been told this by several 1st lv customer service tech support and two 2nd lv tech support. but now it seems after kicking up a fuss that 3rd lv tech support stated they DO traffic shape and its in the t&c, news to me!

for the first week things were great, then after exactly a week with ukonline, once you are locked into a contract, all my torrents speed dropped from 500kbps to 50kbps max and their filtering has cut in. don't trust UKOline ppl they are miss selling a product.

contacting ofcom and the ombudsman today, jees i have bad luck with isp's

ok can anyone please confirm this for me:

i was told by a lv3 tech support guy from ukonline today, that it isn't them traffic shaping me but its BT. he said that if an isp does not have a traffic shaping policy BT cap to reduce the load on the exchange. is this true?

Im sorry i didnt realise UKonline had ipstream based product and cant comment on it as you are the first person i have herd from that is on it..
My comment above was indeed about there LLU product, but what you are saying should be of concern to all UKonline users as thay might be in forcing the FUP on there ipstream product it would only seem normal that thay could in force the same system on the LLU customers at a future date..

ah sry i should have made myself clearer, i am not on a llu connection at my exchange i'm on the upto 8meg (pro) service and even though i'm about 2 miles from our exchange i get an average of 6meg connection.

but exactly 1 week after my sign up i am having issues with traffic shaping but ukonline told me that it was BT not them doing this, can you confirm that bt do this or are they talking poop?

I cant remember the web site that shows if your exchange is congested and is near maximum capacity, if you can find this information and your exchange is in the green i think im pretty safe in saying that its not bt throttling your connection but your ISP trying to keep there ipstream centrals in the green so there is no packet loss by using port throttling or traffic shaping..
I remember my time with pipex and they done something very similar to my connection , and it was any big file, it would happen with, first 35mb of the file would fly down and then the port throttle kicked in, and bang i was left with a sometimes sub dial up speeds...so i use to disconnect change the port and bang another 35mb at full speed...
When i spoke with them on the phone they also lied to me about port throttling my connection, but i was not on a 12 month contract so just migrated away...

The OP's exchange here.

To the OP - UKOnline, in your words, are talking poop.

BT do not throttle or cap any other ISP's customer connections from the customer to his exchange. Sometimes there can be congestion at that exchange - see above - there isn't at yours.

As UKOnline is primarily an LLU supplier, (it's actually the Easynet LLU network they bought), then it looks like the same is happening to you as is happening to Sky users. Sky bought UKOnline!

Possibly I have got the detail wrong, but Sky own the other two and the equipment was originally Easynet's.

It is well known on these forums that SKY LLU is fine->good. Sky Connect, their IPStream product, is to be avoided at all costs. You in effect are on it .

I wonder if it is just that Sky/UKOnline do not have much IPStream capacity their end as LLU is their focus and that's where the money goes.

UKOnline admit traffic shaping P2P!

well it seems i have been lied to from the beginning as UKOnline on their ipstream connections, (none llu) DO traffic shape and their effects are far worse that what i had with eclipse internet. I was telephoned today by the customer service team stating that they could not turn off the traffic shaping to 1 connection so the only option was to allow me to leave my contract without any early termination fees.

i had a great connection free from any network management other than the contention ratio for 1 week exactly before ANY slowdown, just enough time to dupe the average user into a contract.

The effect of UKOnline's is a complete shut down of all connections while p2p is running, the traffic shaping cuts in anywhere upto half an hour of p2p being in use.

what is bad is that the sales team still maintain that ukonline do not traffic shape in any way, shape or form and this needs to be brought to the attention of everyone for the benefit of the average pc user that wouldn't realise they had duped by an unscrupulous company.

BEWARE OF UKONLINE PPL THEY LIE!

They are lying and miss selling a product which i recorded to tape, they had 0 choice of letting me out of my contract, so next i will be going to the office of fair trading!

not sure what isp as they are all starting to suck on ipstream or be brought up by tiscali so i'd rather go without until our exchange becomes unbundled tbh.

There's still some good ones on IPStream; Entanet, IDNet, Newnet and Zen to name a few. OK none of them are going to give you the moon on a stick for 15 a month but they are good, solid providers.

im on ipstream , and my ISP dose not lie to me, my ISP gives me a high usage cap and informs me of net work problems and lets me see the status of there ip stream centrals...
Its not perfect but its the best for my needs that i can find at the moment, why don't you have a look at a entanet reseller...
If you don't need such high usage caps and would prefer high constant speeds look at IDnet NewNet ect even Plusnet, to name a few..
Not all Ipstream ISP are the same, there are still good ones out there if you look but as has been said in this thread already your not going to get the moon on a stick and be able to download the internet 24/7 , even the LLU providers might not like or be able to provide full speed all day for ever..
But you are right the difference between SKY/UKonline LLU network and there Ipstream networks is not right and should be made more clear by all concerned...
I would except your get out of the contract and move on, but do report this to the OFT and let them build a case, as it is wrong that isp can sell a product as unlimited then traffic shape and port throttle your connection...

Just one more point of order did you inform them that you where recording your telephone call with them..
If not , your recording is worthless in a court of law

I wonder if you have to warn them when so often they warn you it may be recorded for "training" purposes. In that case there is no expectation of privacy. I record (without warning) my telephone conversations with such help-lines, especially when I am giving important instructions. It can be quite illuminating what a business remembers when you say you recorded a conversation.

i Know it seems mental, and its always good to record phone calls anyway..But i was i dispute with a company and recorded the phone calls, then took that tape to a C.A.B. center, and was told by the adviser they unless i informed them that i was recording the phone call it could not be used as evidence in court..
Its the same with C.C.T.V , you must have a sign up saying that you got C.C.T.V on your premisise that it is recording events...
If you want to spy or record somebody with out them knowing you must first seek permission from a court of law,,this is what i believe the police have to do so those recordings are then aloud to be used as evidence in court..
But what i did find with my recording was it was very easy to get people on your side after playing them the recording , and still to this date record my important phone calls with out informing people that i am but understand a court will not except it as evidence...

When you ring up and they say "calls may be recorded", that gives you permission to record them.

Whether a court would accept a recording as evidence is a separate issue.

This following site suggests it is legal to record your own phone conversations without telling the other party.

So what i have said is right then, you cant use a recording that you have made in court with out the relevant court order or letting the person know that you are recording them...
And as i also pointed out CCTV ,has to have a notice informing people that they are being filmed or again its not aloud to be used in court..
At no time did i say its ilegal to record your phone calls as i my self record important calls...
And as for if they say there recording you, this is a green flag for you to record them and be able to use as evidence, i don't know but that sounds unlikely and would like to see a link to such info....
And reading through the link you gave, i have broken the law as i have played my recording to third partys Oooops...
Well if you dont tell niether will i

That's the "hidden" point.

Many on these forums will be aware of the un-notified recording not being acceptable in court, but I bet 90% or more of the population isn't aware of that. Including the support staff you speak to. I doubt if many, or any, ISPs include that in their training in reading aloud.

(PS - Don't tell anyone I told you!)

@ woweebert

it is not admissible in criminal court, in the case of a civil matter it can be entered. Anyhows just posting the recording to youtube with a few good headers of a company lying their asses off is bad enough, because of the customer losses, if they want to keep it hidden that they are traffic shaping 24/7 on their ipstream products lying isn't the way to do it. i even had a lv 3 tech support guy tell me that it was BT not them.

anyway matter closed now as i am being issued my mac code and not being charged a penny by the lier(s) at UKOnline.

and for the record their traffic shaping is worse than eclipse internets, i have for the last week been constantly throttled to 10kbps down 5kbpsup MAX SPEED, and when p2p is in use ALL connections to the net FAIL, no msn, no ie7 or firefox, ect your speed is reduced to 0.
