IDNet Support ?

[link to this post]

Hello,

I'm thinking of changing ISP and would appreciate your advice.

I've been with Nildram for the last 6 years (or so) but I've decided to look elsewhere as the service has gone really downhill (From having a quick look round the forum it seems I'm not the only one)

The IDNet Home Max product seems to fit the bill and they seem to do quite well in the ratings. However, it looks like they only provide phone support during office hours Monday to Friday. I've emailed IDNet and asked about this and they said that support is available outside of these hours via email. Surely this about as much use as a 1 legged cat trying to bury turds on a frozen pond ? or am I missing the point ? How can I email them if the broadband is not working ?

They also have a dial-up number (which I can't remember off the top of my head) which you can use in emergencies.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, even out of hours their service is usually a lot better than most companies can manage during office hours!

As "they seem to do quite well in the ratings" is a slight under-statement, your choice is to go for them or go for one with 24/7 support staffed by people who can just about read from their scripts as long as neither the question nor answer require technical words or acronyms.

Strangely, it is with the latter that you need 24/7 support!

There are of course other good ISPs just below IDNet in the ratings. Newnet are similar on the support hours, Zen I don't know. I think vivaciti of the Entanet resellers do, and Entanet themselves possibly, but they have the ALT system which may not be to your liking.

Re dialup - Purple Cloud have an 0845 dialup number for internet access, and you don't need an account or sign-up with them. Click in my sig.

Bob: BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet Lite.
Purple Cloud for domain reg/hosting, email hosting and now also web space.

Entanet do indeed have 24/7 support, not sure if (m)any of the resellers do.

As billford said Idnet out of hours service is via telephone or email and is usually picked up very quickly very often solved at the same time. I have been with them for over 2 years and have never needed support as it just works. Those who have needed support either in or out of office hours have reported very favourably on their experience.

Well worth giving them a try as it is only a 1month contract, lots of people have tried it because of the 1 month and all are still with them.

IDNet support is brilliant - but I only needed it once in 2 years. I've now moved to Sky in order to save 20 per month.; as others say IDnet support is excellent but it could be regarded as a fairly expensive insurance policy.

But it's free so is not expensive at all. Free phone call, free email and no charge for the expertise or courteousness.

of course its not free, why do you think idnet charge so highly for such small allowances? partly to ensure the funding is there for the backhaul provision to ensure a good level of service, but partly to fund the 'free' support, the phone bills and wages still need paying by somebody. other companies (tiscali et al) charge far less for more data, and their backhaul and support suffer as a consequence.

It would be wise to actually check what ADSL services you can get first before parting with any cash.

LLU providers such as Sky and Be will give you the best speeds, biggest caps or no caps at all - no throttling - and at the lowest cost.

Use the link I have put below and it will tell you exactly what ADSL services you can get by just putting in your post code or phone number (i.e. it may say "Sky LLU" or "Be LLU" - that means you can use Sky or Be and they are an LLU service).

Link to ADSL services checker.

Using ISPs such as Sky or Be will give you more bang for your bucks - plus someone like Sky will give you a "deal" of their TV channels - free phone calls - and your broadband connection from 26 a month for everything!

It's expensive if the reason you choose IDNet over Sky is because of the support.

Yeah, true - but like most insurance policies, it depends how often you need to call upon it.

It's free in the way that you don't have to pay extra for phone calls or extra for support on top of the monthly subscription. Using your argument air inside buildings is not free because of the charge incurred with council taxes etc to live there.

Anyone can make up arguments for anything if they feel so inclined, that doesn't mean they are right, however.
