I'm on BT Broadband Option2 (20GB limit at £17.54 a month).
But I now need a static IP address.
And it seems the only way I can do this is to upgrade to BT Business Broadband at £22.50 per month + £5 per month for a static IP address.
Is there any other way to do this with BT, or can anyone recommend an ISP that offers static IP addresses ?

There are plenty of providers that will give you a single static IP, or even a block for free.
We're able to do this for free, but there are others such as Enta (their resellers, UKFSN, ADSL24 etc), Plusnet, Zen and so on .

I wouldn't bother with BT Business! What services are available at your exchange?

IDNET offer static ip as standard and a 1 month contract. Very highly regarded isp.

Out of interest, why do you suddenly need a static IP?

I want to plug a hard drive (NAS) in so that I can access it from wherever I may be.

You can do that using a dynamic DNS service

There is LLU at my exchange but I think I am too far away to get this. I'm currently on BTMax (up to 8Mb) but I only get 1MB
|
|
|
|
What LLU is available?
What's your attenuation?
|
|
|
|
O2/Be
Orange
TalkTalk
Tiscali
Attenuation is 31.5 / 62.0
SN Margin is 9.0 / 6.0

O2, if they'll accept you with those stats, will be far cheaper for a far better and unlimited service. A static IP is available with O2 but services such as No-IP or DynDNS etc will suit your needs anyway.

Steve,
I have got about a 60-61db downstream att, when I was through BT on their profiling system I got 1mb, I am now LLU and because I don't have the profiling system now get about 2mb. I would recommend going over to LLU purely to get rid of the profiling system.
With the intermittency and level of background noise you get on longer lines it makes them more prone to have the odd disconnection issue, this can also lead to a reduction in your bt bras profile, with LLU you cut that out, so you connect as fast as you can, each time you connect.

BE say I am too far away but that they would be happy to provide broadband if I move closer to the exchange ! - wish I'd thought of that, it would have saved a lot of hassle.
O2 say they don't provide broadband in my area - though the Samknows exchange search says they do.
Orange will (up to 8Mbps service) but are more expensive than BT
I am a long way from the exchange, in the past I have variously been told it is 5.7Km or 6.5Km cable length.

You can do that using a dynamic DNS service
BatBoy says you don't need a static IP address to do what you're wanting to do.

I've just got a DynDNS url and I'm looking at this approach now.
From what I can see though I would need to leave a PC connected to my router in order to update the IP address whenever it changed.
Sometimes I'm away for a few days (taking my laptop with me), do you know how often BT changes the dynamic IP - is it just when the router is powered off, or is it on a regular basis ?

Check your router for DynDNS compatibility.
|
|
|
|
It's a BT Homehub
It lists DynDNS under the Dynamic DNS configuration. I doesn't say why it needs to know the service and host - can the router keep the DynDNS url up to date without a PC being connected ?
|
|
|
It can.

Hi, last year, I had a solid connection with fixed speed 2Mbps service on Tiscali Business.

Until the ISP 186k/EzeeDSL failed to pay the account.
