hi,
i'm currently live in Birmingham
i'm an oversea student and i move out to apartment in 6 month contract
so any suggestion on which provider?
i've been doing research and compare a lot today
but still not sure at the end.
i've been think about get full 12 month contract
then cancel half way paying the cancel charge
what do you think?
Plusnet seem to be a good answer, is it good?
Be is also good but i heard that sky bought it already so i can't use it right?
Zen is the expensive one i think i'm gonna list it as last option
oh by the way i quite use it a lot so mobile broadband was not an option for me
please help me out
thankyou very much

oh i just found that someone already ask and answered
but if any suggestion you want please feel free.

sometimes it is better to ring the provider as the normal offers are for 12+ months. Try vivaciti.net or plus.net I think "Arnold & Arnold" may also provide a short term connection.

Although he has heavy usage - AAISP might not be the wisest choice for that, depending on when during the day the usage is (daytime 9am-6pm usage is REALLY expensive, but otherwise it's quite reasonable)

Has the apartment got an active phone line installed?
If so put the phone number or the postcode into this checker and see what is available from the exchange and post back the results or a link to them.
|
|
|
If there's an active landline
Plusnet do no contract broadband. It's 2.50 extra monthly
If there's not an active line it's probably cheaper to do a 12 month contract including free line install and pay the extra 6 months at the end

Hi thanks for many reply.
sorry if this will bother you.
in the word "Active Landline"
is it mean
the room got phone number?
or
the room got a socket for asking for phone number?
i have to say, in this stage i don't know yet
but i assume that the tenant that live before me will cancel every service they got
when they leave their room.
if that case happen, it mean that i will have to ask for landline to install again, right?
which mean i have to pay some like 40-50 pound before i get one, right?
but when i try to order plus net and they ask for phone number. I choose i don't have phone number and just put post code there, choose the room number. they said their check show that there is a working phone line
at my property, and ask me that to install new phone line or take over and switch to plus net.
is this phone number belong to me or to the previous tenant? or choose i ask the agency?
plase feel free to correct if my thought was wrong and excuse me if my language is confuse you guys
anyway, thank for suggestion

Active landline just means when you plug a phone into the socket, it's not silent - there's a dial tone
but i assume that the tenant that live before me will cancel every service they got
when they leave their room.

It depends really. They can move out and cancel everything. This would immediately stop outgoing calls being made but British Telecom might leave the line active for months after.
but when i try to order plus net and they ask for phone number. I choose i don't have phone number and just put post code there, choose the room number. they said their check show that there is a working phone line
at my property, and ask me that to install new phone line or take over and switch to plus net.
It's basically letting you know that right now there is an active landline at the property which you can have the plusnet services installed on probably for free.
is this phone number belong to me or to the previous tenant? or choose i ask the agency?
The number belongs to the previous tenant but it doesn't really matter.
All we care about is if there's a landline, with power and a dial tone. You get a different number even if you use the current landline.
It looks like there's an active landline there right now.
Honestly the very best way to do this is to speak with PlusNet as they can advise properly and they know all of the facts 100%. So they can definitely know if there's an active landline, prices etc.
Although I think if there is an active landline your best bet is plusnet.
If not, then go for Sky or TalkTalk if you have LLU available at your postcode. We can check this for you if necessary

thank you very much!
you really help me out
can i also ask some suggestion more on vivaciti (for knowledge and optional)
so correct me if i wrong
if i try to use them, i have to purchase a phone number from bt first
(which will charge me around 15 a month and also tie with 12 month contract,
which i have to pay a terminate fee after that as well)
then i have to pay provider saying 25 a month
(and i believe i have to buy new router as well)
is that correct?

Active landline just means when you plug a phone into the socket, it's not silent - there's a dial tone And if there is a dial tone, dial 1470 17070 and it will tell you its number as "This circuit is defined as ...".

The Post Office Home phone is not only cheaper than B.T. but has no contract tie-in for line rental, so you can leave with one months notice. I am happy with them. You don't even have to pay by Direct Debit if you don't wish to. No penalty if you choose to pay your bills for free at the Post Office counter or whatever.
http://www.postoffice.co.uk/home-phone There are several ISPs that supply Broadband with no contract tie-in. My ISP is Freeola which resells Entanet. Superb customer service and not quite so expensive as other no tie-in ISPs. With un-metered usage between 7.00pm and 7.00am and all weekends, I find the 40Gb package ample. Even offer the first month at half price to trial. http://freeola.com/broadband/

Just get everything via plusnet
Don't get anything via BT
So line rental, free calls and broadband via plusnet.
Sorted

Plusnet would be 4.99 + 14.50 on a 12 month contract. This assumes you are in an area where you get plusnets cheapest deals (most places are)
Or 4.99 + 2.50 + £14.50 on no contract
That's total price including your phone, broadband and line rental.
So not too expensive
Keep it all with one provider
If you need to get a new line sky's a good one
That's around £24 monthly (everything included)
12 month contract though
You get a new line for £10 usually vs £50 - £120 elsewhere
|
|
|
Don't forget to mention the actual Plusnet price if the exchange is Market 1. You are looking at £15.49 per month Plus the £14.50 line rental (£179.94) Or £12.99 plus rental for a 12 month contract (329.88). Either way, expensive for a six month stay.
Six months No tie-in with the Post Office, for Line rental, which includes Evening and weekend calls, plus mobile and calls to 40 countries at weekends, is £13.25 per month. Adding no tie-in Freeola Broadband at £19.99 per month, gives a total cost of £199.44 for the six month stay, with more free calls thrown in than the cheapest Plusnet package. Still as good option as any in my book.

Plusnet unlimited, 12 month contract will be £4.99 if you are on a Market 2 or 3 exchange ("low cost area"), setup will be free if you take their home phone deal, early termination charge will be £5.50 per month (in your case perhaps 6 x £5.50 = £33)
Line rental will be £14.50 for their "Plusnet Weekends" deal, "start a stopped line" will be free if applicable, early termination charge will be £4.80 per month (in your case perhaps 6 x 4.80 = £28.80)
Router can be included but there will be a £5.99 P&P charge.
You probably will not find a better deal that this if only a six month period of usage is required, but it really depends on the status of your phone line and whether you are in a "low cost area".
Good luck.

There may also be a broadband cease charge, £25, although it says only payable if you are in contract on the Plusnet site.

Sure - sorry forgot about that

I highly doubt any student area will be a market 1
Areas near universities are mainly market 3 due to the higher populations. Hence my pricing. I did suggest it could be more (although unlikely)

PN showing £5.99 PM here http://www.plus.net/info2/legal/price_guide.html#bro... In anycase, add up all the figures above and the total is £188.99 - Almost identical to the post Office Freeola combination, but far less included calls and services, along with certainly much worse customer services. Never take headline prices at face value, especially from the masters of the small print. ISPs are much of a muchness, the difference is customer service, but hey. let's keep pushing Minusnet!

I'm reluctant to return to PN myself despite the exchange being 21CN WBC enabled and Market 2/3 for personal reasons, i.e. problems with support dealing with a line fault in the past.
However even though PN support was far from perfect over one single issue I don't think suggesting their current BB and line rental deals based on pricing alone is in any way preferential. If PN support was proportionately and consistently worst than other ISPs for end users then of course one would probably not suggest them even on the basis pricing

I went into the order process and filled it in with my details and during the order process pressed change on the 12 month contract & selected no contract
It added 2.50 monthly for having no contract

That's really good - so no contract on the BB just a 30 day minimum term, no setup costs but one would have to have a line rental contract for 12 months? And the line rental could be terminated early subject to a fee of from £4.80 per month?

That would cost £142.80 just to get out of the phone line contract after 6 months, without what had been paid for services. Small print obviously pays!

The OP is now talking about a room, presumably in a multi-occupancy house. As such, goodness knows what an ISP check on the address shows. It's unlikely to be the only line at the premises.

It was on this page.
Under point 4 there is a section beginning "Cessation charges don't apply if:"
I did think it seemed odd when I read it as I would have expected you would have to pay the fee under all circumstances of ceasing broadband.

Good Lord! Yes, you're right, and the way it is worded almost certainly excludes an error. Introduced with the two current products, along with an "if applicable" on the page I gave you.

Thanks for your concern
|
|

gosh!
i see it now!
here
you have to read number 6 second line
then
number 4 first section
right?
which mean, i have to pay 25 pound to get out as well right?

Possibly if you took a no contract broadband deal and you gave the required notice to end that service then termination of the phone service would not be the cause of the broadband cease so a broadband cessation charge would not apply...
If that is the case, then I guess, one would have to first give notice about stopping the broadband before giving notice regarding terminating the line rental? Early termination of the line rental would still presumably carry the from £4.80 per month penalty for each of the remaining months of the line rental contract?

I know you asked for "broadband" but have you considered 3G? Do you need a landline? What sort of usage are you looking at.
It may be that one of the 3G data packages on www.three.co.uk with a MiFi dongle might do all you need and without needing to sign up to anything other than a 1 month rolling contract.

thanks for suggestion
but i may need the usage a little bit more than mobile broadband
download large file, view plenty of youtube per day
online gaming and also i share the internet with my friend
so for usage per month i think it will require quite to much
(i guess 30-40 gb)
|
|
|
|
OK, yep - with that sort of usage... The only plan that I know of that could fit it is the One Plan from Three which allows tethering and "unlimited" (although not certain what the definition of unlimited is with this one but think people have used more than that) - but that might end up costing you more and not give the performance you need.
