Who to choose?

[link to this post]

I am one of the few probably still on copper broadband, I never saw the need to upgrade to fibre over the years.

Anyway, on Sunday, my connection kept dropping; it would only stay connected for a few seconds to a few minutes at a time. I put in a support ticket with my ISP, which has been ignored (at the time of writing).

My quandary is, if I decided now to upgrade to fibre, would this current issue affect that or not (excuse my stupidity with fibre broadband, I'm not very knowledgeable)? If it does not affect fibre, who to choose? Ideally, I would have picked my current ISP, but being ignored by them is putting me off. I see others saying acquiss is a good choice, and to be honest, they are one I would consider (at the moment) my top choice. Are there any others to consider or look at?

Thanks in advance.

Presumably you mean moving to “full fibre” - that is a fibre connection all the way to the premises (FTTP) and with BT Openreach?

You may also have alternative fibre networks (not Openreach) with their own dedicated fibre networks that serve you or are nearby like CityFibre, Hyperoptic, YouFibre etc etc. There are about 100 such networks that operate in various parts of the UK.

Also you may already be on an FTTC connection (fibre to the cabinet and copper from the cabinet to you). In any event have you checked the BT Wholesale checker to confirm what is available at your address - at least from Openreach?

It really depends what your current problem is. If it is actually your wireless, then it could well affect FTTP.

Aquiss generally is a good choice, BUT remember that they do not supply a router, which means that you'll need to become a bit knowledgeable, set up your own router and support everything your side of the ONT.

Support did get back to me in the early hours of the morning. It is, apparently, a voice issue/fault. I removed my phone and the wires for voice were disconnected in the faceplate very nearly a year ago. The only wires connected are the orange and white for broadband.

Thanks for the info on acquiss, that might be too much to learn in a quick time.

I have checked it now; thank you for the link; it does say FTTP is available (I grabbed screenshots). I'll have to explore my options, I think Trooli are in my area, but I have no idea if they are OK or not. Maybe a forum search of them may help. Or I just stick with upgrading to my current provider; sometimes it's better to stick to the devil, you know.

An update: I'm not sure if it makes any difference; the wholesaler has conducted tests and cannot find any fault on the line. An Openreach engineer visit will be scheduled, which may or may not turn out to be expensive depending on what they find.

An update: support replied during the night it was a voice issue, which I cannot test, as the wires for voice/phone were removed a year ago from the faceplate. But I'm not sure if it makes any difference; the wholesaler has conducted tests and cannot find any fault on the line. it does say FTTP is available
If you can describe your day to day requirements/usage members may be able to make some recommendations based on those requirement. for example: do you need a static IP address?, do you need IPv6?, do you need a voice service?, is customer service or price the biggest consideration?

Lots of people here with lots of different preferences so would be good to here from you about your needs smile

Orange and white ARE for voice. Both voice and data for broadband come down the same wires.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1, VM 2Mb & O2 Standard
Utility Warehouse (up to 16mbps) via Talk Talk, upgraded to fibre 40/10
