Just did a download from gamershell's 1000mbit UK server, and pulled massive speeds which quickly leveled out at 840k/s and was climbing slowly (ended at 855k/s) the current date/time is 11:19 on tuesday (morning)
My take on this is that DSL provision is based on averages across users, it's all contended and it's contended across a lot of people, a business model based on this is never going to be 100% predictable, as usage habits change so does the provision.
I think Ace so far have handled this well, which from what I've heard is more than what we can say for how well Ace's suppliers have handled it. Ace posted they were investigating the problems early on, they found out why and have informed us. The website has been changed so new users know what kind of service they are going to recieve up on signup (I CANNOT BELIEVE SOME OF YOU ARE STIRING *** ABOUT THIS - how could this be handled any better, would you prefer new users be lied to? GROW UP)
I'm perfectly willing to put up with throtteling during the world cup once every 4 years for a couple of weeks if thats the realistic outcome of this.
I will reserve my judgement for after the world cup to see what happens, only then will we know the truth about all this. However if this sort of thing becomes more frequent or becomes permenant then I'll probably have to move to another ISP, again I will reserve my judgement.
All I can say is that Ace's service has been just as fast and reliable (on friday) since when I first joined a month or so ago. If it was a problem with Ace in any way then I'm certainly not seeing that problem as my speeds have been brillian, still about 400 k/s during peak hours over http/ftp downloads.
I also don't get why people make comments like this:- "Mistral won't keep slinging in 155Mbps pipes to allow Ace to fulfil their business plan"
Surely Minstral sell their bandwidth onto Ace at some kind of profit, and that any business plan they have with Ace will be one they can sustain? I don't know because I can't claim to know the business plan they have set in place, but I'd pretty dumbfounded if I was to learn that it was one where Ace somehow get bandwidth for free which is really the only circumstance that would make the above comment true.
If Minstral do make a profit of all the bandwidth they sell to Ace then I would have thought that quite the opposite of the above statement would be true and that Minstral would be quite happy to expand their business to make more money. If not then thats Minstrals fault, not Ace's.
Maybe someone here knows and can enlighten me?
Additionally Steve, we were told Monday would be a likely time to get news the new newsgroup access, where are we with this?
