Plusnet or Talk Talk????????????

[link to this post]

Hi all currently trawling through the boards looking to switch providers.
Currently with IDnet 2mb broadband 5gb limit which is all well and good but expensive for what it is.
With BT for home phone which again is expensive.
So currently narrowed down to Plusnet and Talk Talk for combined Phone and Broadband.
Talk Talk are in my exchange with llu so if i was unsatisfied i would have to pay bt for reconnection frown
Is there any benefit to llu with talk talk or will plusnet be adequate for general websurfing and online gaming.
Any speed would be better than 2mb for starters lol

Any help appreciated smile

To find out what speed you could get on either we need to see your line stats. If you need help finding them see Kitz on this page.

Yak! You have a dilemma and I'm not qualified from personal experience to advise as I'm lucky enough to have O2 LLU which leaves them both standing.

Did you put those figures into the farina adsl2+ checker linked on the same page?

Plusnet have a 14-day contract (subject to first year possible joining costs if you leave in the first year) and you will get the 8Mbps, unless interleaved in which case it might only be 7616kbps.

TalkTalk should give their full 16Mbps (is it?), but an 18-month contract.

Both providers have good and bad points from what I see. TT really kill P2P and Plusnet have heavy throttling. Support from both through the official channels seems ropey. Plusnet reps on here seem quite good, and I read that on the TalkTlak in-house forums the same happens - good reps.

Just as a point of interest can you get O2 LLU? At the moment you can get a full year from them at between £13.11 and £84.17. The Premium package which works out cheaper than the Standard one is £13.11-£57.12. See the costing page page produced by MKD. So paying for the landline separate isn't too painful.

To go over 8Meg with TalkTalk means £4 boost per month.

Plusnet will probably do faster than 8Meg for less, and it looks like your line will go over that when available.

Which Plusnet package? The £5.99 is probably not ideal for a gamer, the £19.99 Pro is more suited generally (unless they've all changed since I last looked a couple of weeks ago).

Plusnet traffic management can look frightening, but TalkTalk do their own too, just less detail is published.

I'd go for TalkTalk anyday lol. If you want the Speed Boost, you'll get about 20Mb sync... ~18Mb throughput. Their forum is first class for support. They still offer the 30-day "trial period", if you are not happy then you will not have to pay the cessation fee if you cancel within the 30 day period. However, you probably wont because of the amazing support on the forum (if needed).

Netgear DG834PN // v1.03.39 // Wireless
TalkTalk // 21695kbps // 1019kbps // FSNR6

Certainly TalkTalk would be the better option if they are the only LLU provider on your exchange.

TalkTalk throttle P2P during peak periods if the exchange is congested, but PlusNet throttle ALL of the time accross ALL types of traffic.

Also, TalkTalk have a great support forum at www.talktalkmembers.co.uk

They can enable fastpath and a fast line sync for you with a click of a mouse, giving you sub-20ms pings and a ~20 meg sync rate on the line.

PlusNet however will give you slower pings, and won't have the ability to change your line settings at the click of a mouse. Also PlusNet won't be able to deliver over 8 meg as you say your exchange isn't ADSL 2+ 21CN enabled, but TalkTalk will via their LLU.

There seem to be far more merits to being with TT than with Plusnet.
