Moving from F2S

[link to this post]

I think that I need to change from F2S - what do you think? F2S has been rock solid for over 4 years but a month ago I changed to their 10gb capped service from an unlimited service and that seems to have triggered lots of speed loss.

At peak times my connection drops to below 800kbps which makes streaming a bit difficult on the XBox and Computer. No chance of HD stuff. Does my BT profile tell me that I could shift to a new ISP and get a better speed?

Ping is fluctuating between 50ms (good I know) and 200ms+. F2S have me on interleaving but I can't say for sure whether I've always been on that. I know that COD on the XBox never had to hunt for games due to my high ping as much as it has been over the past 4 weeks.

Thanks for any help.

Pity about the exchange frown. The line is good for 20Mbps connection speed on ADSL2+.

Depending on your needs I would consider IDNet, (if you navigate around the site make sure you don't end up looking at the ADSL2+ packages which are better but you can't get), Zen and Newnet. Note that Newnet count upload as well a download, and the unlimited night period seems to get counted accidentally at times. Best to ask in their forum here as it is supposed to have been fixed, but ....

Some comparisons.

Thanks for that.

Why's my BT profile drop so much (never mind F2S's connection speed) during the evening?

Is that exchange conjestion rather than F2S congestion?

Your IP Profile is at 6500kbps which is correct for a 7616kbps connection. That is also a common maximum for interleaved lines.

It isn't your IP Profile that is dropping, just the throughput. There can be (at least) four reasons for this, or perhaps a combination of them.

1) Your exchange is congested. Check using both of the following:-

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/
http://www.nildram.net/support/tools/congestion_chec...

2) F2S are using traffic management on that package and throttling you at certain times of day.

3) They are suffering from congestion themselves. This could be due to their having different types of connection to BT and your new package uses a different one that is under-provisioned.

4) You are testing speeds through a wireless connection to your router and there is a new source of interference on the channel you are using. If you are using wireless then InSSIDer is a great tool to see if this is possible.

Thanks. I think that this is drifting into the Tech Forum (!) - sorry.

I logged a BT speedcheck last night which gave me a 1100kbps download with a minimum acceptable level of 1200kbps but I couldn't log into the second test (datastream/IP stream issue I think). This is par for the course at evenings.

Answers below. I'm on a wired connection.

I think that it's time to move ISP just for a change. Will give IDNet a go I think.
