Was just reading this thread and since the guys line seems to be perfectly fine, I might have a stab at guessing.

We have forgot to consider outside factors. The factors being...

1. PSN. Pretty bad compared to Live. I am a Street Fighter player and very sensitive to lag when I play (especially when trying the more difficult combos with lag). Me and my friend play on 360 and PS3. None of us can really play to our potential on PSN but Live allows us to play near enough to our peak because we can react to stuff because pings on Live are better.

2. This is probably more of what is causing the lag. Other people. As you probably know most of the UK is on basic overcongested lines from BT, Sky, Virgin with terrible pings. You may have good internet but this means nothing if the other dude you are playing with has 100+ ping (makes sense too since you said it gets better at 10pm which is when the networks on these big companies will ease). An example of this is when I was playing my friend in Glasgow (I am from Edinburgh) and I can ping London at 24 ms. Now bearing in mind that 1 frame is like 15.7 ms, that should theoretically mean that I have less than 2 frames of lag when playing him (taking into account the Live servers) but because he is on BT, we cannot even move properly on the screen.

I then game with my friend from London who is also on Be, since he has a good fastpath line (I think he can ping me with the same values as said before of 24 ms) we can pretty much play as if it was an offline match.

Hope that helps. Stay with Be as they are not the problem.
