Re: What speed with LLU provider.

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]

11-14000 kbps downstream would be more than enough for me. Would anyone be able to advise on upstream adsl+2? My two concerns are 1) Just checking the thinkbroadband map in my area and anyone who has posted talk talk speed results show nowhere near those kinds of speeds. 2) I have heard so many horror stories regards TT it would be a big leap to go with them. Are these fears unfounded?

No reason to not expect the upstream to be in the usual ADSL2+ range of 700 to 800 Kbps

What do you expect TalkTalk to offer in that respect?

Editing my post as I mistook upstream for downstream...so TT is back on the table

Well what sort of upstream speeds were you expecting to see?

Unlikely to see any ADSL2+ going much faster, apart from those using Annex M but I don't expect you to see much from Annex M

I currently get almost consisitent 400kbps with BT so those speeds would be an improvement. Once my speed was sorted(with help from all the guys on this forum) I have had faultless service with BT and very consistent speeds. To switch to TT seems a big risk. Everyone here though seems to be saying that speeds should be ok with them. I live in the countryside maybe two-ish miles or more from the exchange (I think) on a new line from the road to my house. would this distance effect adsl+2. And why does Samknows say adsl+2 is not at my exchange?

Had talktalk for 2 years on a longer line 45dB and got 7 Meg connection from it, so you should go faster (was 5.5Meg with ADSL). Now trying Sky to see what they are like.

As for SamKnows depends on whether they get the updates and roll them into their database.

Upstream sync should be around 1022Kbps with ADSL2+ connected to TT kit at the exchange.

Resellers will do partial LLU using TT exchange kit which might be an option due to your totally understandable cautiousness regarding TT full LLU. Resellers' prices will generally be higher than TT but one month minimum terms will be available and landline rental can be kept with BT.

However, currently, to migrate from resellers' TT partial LLU to BT based broadband (e.g. 21CN WBC ADSL2+) may involve a £48 fee if a move were to be contemplated in the future which might be worth bearing in mind.

Your ADSL2+ speed is mainly determined by your known attenuation which accounts for the distance.
In reply to a post by Speedchaser:

Cuz it, 21CN, isn't at your exchange. But it's irrelevant as TT don't use 21CN; they have their own ADSL2+.

You won't get the 11 to 14 Meg Down bandied about here cuz no one else has taken account of the increase in attenuation that will occur with ADSL2+.

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 19 Meg WBC

So if that was taken into account what would speed likely to be?

This is an issue debated quite often here. In a lot of cases the attenuation on a line when using ADSL rises by about 3dB when that line is changed to ADSL2+. (By the way - it is ADSL2+, not ADSL+2). In a fair number of other cases this doesn't happen, and the attenuation is the same on both.

We have never had an explanation of this inconsistency, so it is best to consider the possibility, (in my opinion high probability), of it happening on your line. It may be simply down to the router used.

I often use this graph to provide estimates here. Take it as a reasonable guide, not gospel, and in your case look at 36dB and 39dB.

On that graph I also regard the Average curve as ludicrously low, and caused by a large number of samples taken from installations with dodgy home phone wiring or worse.

There used to be a slightly better but harder to use graph, but it has been removed from its site. I never downloaded it frown.
