Firefox 3.5

[link to this post]

Firefox, a rival to Microsoft's market domination, will release version 3.5 later this month.

Its features will include geolocation - information targeted to your location, in-built video players, and private browsing. It comes after nightly testing by 10,000 volunteers.

I went though a phase of using Firefox, then I went to Chrome and now I'm really liking Safari 4, even though I originally hated it. I find it the quickest browser, though I do have a soft spot for IE8 too.

That is if you use Google and their products, I tend to stay away from Google these days.

I know where I am so I don't need a browser to tell me smile

I can see it being useful on a laptop or any other portable web browsing device, but nto too useful on a desktop.

I have been using Firefox for years now, and before it was firefox I used Netscape. I only used IE if I had to, now that 99% or more of sites use Firefox with no problem I just stay with Firefox, in fact IE is not a option on my computer any more as I got rid of it, well I got rid of it as much as what Microsoft will allow you too.

I have used IE8 just to have a look, but it don't do what I want from it and the stuff it have got I don't want.

Opera is ok, but I don't like the way it handles cookies.

Chrome is ok, but a bit basic and it is Google, so trusting it not to send all my browsing to google is hard.

Safari is great on the Mac, it is good on the P.C, but like Chrome it is to basic.

Firefox allows me to add things to it, some I can't be without now, I know Firefox got it's faults, like being slow to start up, but I think it is the best browser out there at the moment.

Amen to that -- I don't know of any other browser where you can add a feature to translate Japanese text just by hovering the cursor over it (though obviously you still need some knowledge to be able to piece it together, which fortunately I do tongue). Until they have something similar available for another broswer, I'm a Firefox man.

Though I'd be a 64-bit Firefox man if stupid Adobe would hurry up and make a 64-bit version of Flash, so I wouldn't have to do without YouTube. I thought 3.5 would be the ticket, what with its built-in media-playing feature, but the 64-bit version of the release candidate doesn't do Flash frown

Fair enough. I don't use many addons, but the ones I do I find useful, like Delicious, no script and a couple of others.

I tried the beta, but some of my add ons did not work, I also found it was slower to start. I will stay with version 3 until I go back to Xp and then go back to Version 2, which I think was the best Firefox.

Are you aware Firefox version 2 is no longer supported by Mozilla? It has known security vulnerabilities in it, and Mozilla are not going to fix them:

I know, but it is a better browser, it don't crash for a start, this version 3 will crash for no reason, mostly if I look at a inbeded video.

Anyway, I have had no problem before, the only reason I don't use FF2 now is because it will not run on windows 7 for some reason.

Just found out that some of those add-ons actually do have updated versions, but these aren't getting downloaded by a "Check for updates to add-ons" -- they need to be downloaded directly from their websites. So now Rikai-chan works fine... but unfortunately still no updated version of Tab Mix Plus frown

Well, I bit the bullet and installed it, all add ons seem to work apart from Roboform, I will have to see if a update will work, I need Roboform.

It is normally when I use embeded video for some reason, like on the BBC news web site, now and again You Tube.

Could be a flash problem more than a Fire fox problem I suppose.

I just have updated my XP Pro FF3 to the latest FF3.5 yesterday and found that this FF3.5 takes considerably time (i.e. about 20s) to first load-up compared to my previous FF3. But after the FF3.5 first loaded and if I shut it down, then it would restart pretty normally though! I have tried disabling Kaspersky IS 2009 prior to FF3.5 first load-up, thinking of this might interfere with FF3.5, but it did'nt make any difference at all. Any idea or if someone have similar experience?

Thanks

Sometimes they have an experimental version for 3.5 available, but you might need to hunt a bit -- this applies to Tab Mix Plus, so huzzah, I can still click on a bookmark entry and not have it replace the current tab! grin

Its quite funny how Mozilla is now playing catch up to IE as it introduced InPrivate Browsing first.

Compeition has allowed IE to evolve into a great browser - more secure and with some great features.

According to Secunia IE 8 is insecure, something the other browsers are not accused of - no patch available yet - (though the 'insecurity' doesn't seem to be all that serious)
