I am unable to view attached photographs on IMAP mail messages using Windows Mail and Live Mail. Is there something I'm missing. (Apart from the photographs  )

A setting for "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened ...."?

Was unchecked, thanks. I get .pdf .doc files etc., but for some reason not .jpg.

No app associated with the jpg file extension? Check using Control Panel > Default Programs. Default is Windows Photo Viewer. It is also possible that the attached files are corrupt.

Default is Irfanview. I can view the attached files by opening with Irfanview. But they don't appear embedded in the email.

It's having them embedded in the body of the email that you are querying.
Perhaps Irfanview isn't compatible with being embedded in emails. Try changing your Default .JPG viewer to Windows Picture & Fax Viewer or Windows Photo Viewer.

Apologies, I didn't make myself clear. I've tried changing from Irfanview to all those listed under Default programs, when changing a file type to a specific program, without success.
I'm sure this worked OK in the past, but I haven't meddled with any settings in email, that I can remember.

So are these imageless emails coming from one contact or is it the same whoever sends?

That never crossed my mind until you mentioned it. The account in question is an IMAP account which I thought may have been the cause. However I've just sent a number of test messages with pictures attached, and they all displayed correctly on opening. So it appears to be just one contact.
I'm at a loss as to why the pictures sent from this contact can be viewed from the attachments but not within the body of the email.
Thanks for the pointer. It proves the IMAP account is fine.

If there are no placeholders where the images should be, they are probably "attaching" the images as files rather than "inserting" them as inline images.

I thought you had it, but I just attached a few JPGs as files and they also appeared in the body of email (both in Sent Item and received item).

Is there a limit as to the number of attachments, or a maximum overall attachment size?

Can you try accessing your email account with POP3 instead of IMAP?
Leave msgs on server so as to maintain the status quo.

Only any overall size limit set by your ISP.
But it can't be that, as the attachments are present, but are just not embedded in the text as well.

To be honest as it's a business email I rather not meddle with it. It has to be accessed via a couple of different computers. I'll email the contact and inform them of the problem.

It could be that this particular sender is sending Plain Text emails rather than HTML. Have a look at the headers for a 1st line: Content-Type: text/plain;.
Anyway, is it worth bothering over? You've still got the attachments.

What you're seeing should always read "Multipart/Mixed" rather tham "Multipart/Related" - See RFC 2387. I have a suspicion that these messages may be being sent via webmail.
Whatever it is, it's the originating end that's at fault.

Mainly utilised by MS Exchange and some webmail systems I believe but could be added anywhere along the journey. IIRC, there was/is a tool available to trace back through to where the problem lies.

It begs the Q as to why Mail can't handle it, particularly if it is RFC'd in 1998.

The client is only doing as it's told and storing the files as attachments. It's the originator that's misconfigured and telling the client how to display the content.

Yes, it sees the files as attachments but I can't see the diff between a .JPG within a "Multipart/Related" and one within "Multipart/Mixed", when the client displays the .JPG embedded in the body text as well in the latter case but not the former.
