I've replaced the hdd in my laptop with a larger 500gig drive. I had a backup of the old drive using Acronis True Image 2013. I installed the image on the new drive and all appears to be working ok.
However I tried to run windows update and get the error message "Windows update service not running" I've downloaded and run Microsoft fix it centre. This reports that the problem was fixed, but it isn't. I've tried other 'fix it' progs with no success.
I seem to recall un-checking a service in 'services' to do with automatic windows updates as the .exe was using 100% processor, but I can't remember what it was. Stupid of me I know.
I would be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.

It wasn't, but there is a 'check for updates' button which should work but doesn't.
I've just looked in Services, and windows is shown as 'Status' started, 'Started Type' Automatic (Delayed Start). I've clicked on 'Restart the service' top left of Services box but nothing has changed.

Have you tried changing to setting to "never check for updates" rebooting,
and changing it back?

Check that BITS (background intelligent transfer service) and Windows Update services are both running.

I was talking about Services which you'd forgotten, not System Properties.
Is the Automatic Updates Service set to Auto?

Yes, that tactic often fixes things. Might not even need to reboot.

Tried that David. Interestingly a quick view of the updating bar then return of the error message.

Check that BITS (background intelligent transfer service) and Windows Update services are both running. Where will I find that info?

Right-click on "My Computer", "Manage/Services".
Thanks. Both shown as Started and Automatic (delayed start) changed both to just Automatic. No difference.
Do you get an error code (0x........) with the message?
As an aside, it may be worth looking at the System Logs (also from "Manage") to see if there are any messages there about the failure.
Sorry, The automatic updates was set to Download but let me choose which to install. It says that under System Properties, not Services. I'm asking you to check your Services.
1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC

When i click on windows update, the window opens. I can see a white cross on a red shield background. There is a 'click for updates' box. When I click the box I get another small box with the message "Windows update can not currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Looking in the Windows System logs there are a number of errors. These may or may not coincide with me checking for updates. One message states, "The Windows Search service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 30000 milliseconds: Restart the service."
It says that under System Properties, not Services. I'm asking you to check your Services. Under services it shows Windows Update as started.
You may want to clear the logs, try the update, and have another look. That way you can be fairly sure that the failure is generating the messages. Ones about search don't sound likely.
Tried the update without a firewall enabled?
But does Services have an Automatic Updates?
1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC

Done that. The errors just mention the Search.
No change.
But does Services have an Automatic Updates? No service of that name, and nothing under Windows Update.
Another thought. Has the new image been validated as genuine with MS?
An image to a new hard disk shouldn't need reactivating. It doesn't constitue a different PC under Microsoft rules.
Quite probably, but worth double-checking, given that non-genuine will prevent updates iirc.
It certainly will, but I'm puzzled by the lack of an error code or a meaningful message in the system logs.
There is a separate log for Windows updates called "windowsupdate.log" IIRC. It's just a plain text file and it should be located in the C:\Windows directory. Have a look there for any likely looking log files, or use search to find all *.log files. That file really ought to give some hint.

If you go into system properties does it indicate that Windows is activated with a Windows Genuine Advantage logo?
Virgin (ADSL) => Namesco => Newnet => O2 => Plusnet => Zen => Newnet => Zen => Freeola => Vivaciti (using O2 Wholesale DSL) => Xilo (C&W Wholesale) => Xilo (O2 Wholesale)
Note: I don't lay turf for anyone. astro or otherwise, all views and opinions expressed are my own based on experience.
Another thought. Has the new image been validated as genuine with MS? states Windows activated and has the logo in the bottom right hand corner.
Well that's the obvious, non-system things.
Have you tried rebooting, stopping the service, setting it to manual, starting it then running the update program manually?

Tried all that Camie, no difference.

Lo and behold. My update wasn't working either. It started and I got never-ending progress with no updates yet.
Last updated July 2012 ( ). Then I got it to work, so maybe there's a chance.
I went into the security centre and set it to 'check for updates but let me decide which one to d/l and install', then set it cracking and it found them within a minute. Perhaps the update source has changed and it takes different ways to get it going.
Who knows.

No Toshiba. Typed 'wuauclt /ShowWUAutoScan' without quotes into a cmd line no difference but an error code 8024A000 appeared. If I can remember how to start an admin cmd I'll work through it.

luckily for Vista and 7 MS provide some good tools to sort these problems out if it persists. Try SFC in the meantime anyhow.

Don't you need the Windows installation disc handy if running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW?
The OP installed the OS on the new drive from an image though - that could be causing the problem...

Scannow is my next step.

In XP sometimes, Vista and above usually you don't need the DVD, unless your installation is really screwed.

Yes I have needed the disc a few times with XP machines, but I've never used Vista and with Win7 scannow has never been required.

Sfc completed. Stated some files were repaired, details in cbs.log. Can't find the log

Check Windows Update now, that may have been enough to fix it.. but regardless of whether it fixes it or not: Reboot and run same command again. Hopefully this time it will say "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations". If not, then you have damaged Windows components, which can be difficult to repair.
If sfc still reporting errors or WU not working:
The cbs.log is always a pain to find AND read, as it contains loads of information. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228
Also are you on Vista SP2? If not, download and install it manually from Microsoft website.
Also, try running this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Just started second scan. I'm on SP2.
Scan completed;
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.
found the CBS.log but access denied

Reboot, copy and paste CBS.LOG to your desktop/documents or something, you should then be able to open up with notepad.

If you can upload it somewhere would be happy to have a look for you, I don't think it contains confidential information, I won't be offended if you would rather not send it though.
Somewhere in there will be an entry telling you what components of the OS are corrupt.

The system went boobs up last night so I removed the new hdd and put the old one back in. Windows update works fine
I'll try another backup from the original disk and see what happens.

Well, I've had to admit defeat. Apparently what I thought was a failing HDD, turns out to be an accidently dropped laptop whilst I was out. No doubt the cause of the hdd fault and probably more.
So, I've bitten the bullet and bought a new Toshiba lappy. Windows 8 isn't very user friendly so I'm finding my way around.
Two questions if I may on W8.
1. The web page scrolling via the touch pad doesn't work. I'm having to click/hold and drag. Is there a setting for this?
2. I don't want a Microsoft email. But can't find an email programme. Is there one installed?

As always I'm late for the party.
Sorry I wasn't around to suggest you get a copy of wufix.zip - it's a batch file that has cured every problem with windows update I've come across. Originally hosted by castlecops.com, it is now hosted at http://techmonkeys.co.uk/downloads/WUFix.zip. Recommended for anyone else with windows updates problems

I'd like to add that I've run into this problem on two separate dell laptops, both times after doing a hard drive upgrade and using Arconis True Image 2013. Both machines were running 32 bit Vista, home premium on one and ultimate on the other.
I don't have any explanation, but Arconis seems to me like the variable.
Additionally, the batch file at techmonkeys.co.uk that Moto linked to solved the problem for me.
Thanks Moto!
