IE 11

[link to this post]

I posted here approx. two weeks ago under 'Duff updates' that I had probs with IE after installing some updates. Updates are shown as installed OK, but IE didn't want to load past the initial blue screen.

As a result I have been using GoogleChrome (much preferred anyway) for everything. Well nearly everything. It's a pain in the proverbial when, for example, a web address within an email insists on trying to load via IE and I have to copy/paste the address into GoogleChrome.

Is there any way I can reload just IE without doing a s/w rebuild? Unfortunately my Dell Inspiron came without any backup disks, and is out of its support period.

Wife's laptop is OK but again no backup disks. We both run under Win.8.1

Any proposals would be very welcome.

I can't answer your question, but you can tell Windows which browser to use for opening external links.

Control Panel >> Programs >> Default Programs >> Set Default Programs, and select Chrome in the list.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 57.2/15.0Mbps @ 600m. - IPv4BQM IPv6BQM

Two alternatives as Bob suggested above make Chrome the default, or reset IE. To reset IE 11 go to Control Panel --> Internet Options --> Advanced Tab --> Press reset button.

Looks the same as ever to me - but I'm using the desktop mode in Win 8.1.

The "Start Menu" mode is garbage.

Thanks Roberto (et al). Did as you advised. Don't know what I've done but (dare I write?) IE11 seems to have changed it's mind. However my preference is still for GoogleChrome.

I am surprised that people still use IE. i have not used it as my main browser for years, come to think of It i do not think I have ever used IE as my main browser,

I have had a look at each new version, but always gone back to Netscape, Phoenix, firebird, firefox, before changing to a Chrome clone about 3 years back.

Now I am trying out Palemoon to see what it is like.

Palemoon is annoying me at the moment,, for some reason it don't remember my zoom options. I normally have the forums in here zoomed in to let me see them better, but on restart, palemoon set it back to default.

interesting view of the different usage of browsers by different communities

I do actually use IE11 on my windows PC and Chrome on the android tablets I have. I think nothing of swapping between them. They are "just there" tools now.

Think you can put Chrome down to the fact every piece of "Free" software on the internet has "Install Chrome" set "Chrome as default browser" etc.
Nothing wrong with IE11

Really? they should have done that years ago. It seems like they will eventually let it die and will go for their Chrome clone.

Hi Ziborg. Not sure whether you meant IE or GC. But anyroadup, I wouldn't be able to get my aged head round it.

Re IE - apparently they have this new jobbie called Spartan in Win 10 (that was in ComputerActive so it must be true, mustn't it?) and it seems does bear some resemblance to GC.

Win10 also includes Cortana and Inking? Er what? I'll be leaving all you techies to sort out the usual MS bugs before I venture into it.

That is the chrome clone, ok it looks like chrome but will use a different engine. It have to be better than IE, anything is better than IE.

As i said I have never used IE as my main browser and I can not see it changing even with their chrome clone.

What is Inking? Cortana will not work in the UK unless you change the language, which I can not be bothered to do and at the end of the day i prefer to do my searching int he browser, not in the OS.
Too much integration and it will all end badly i can see it.

The first known major feature that Spartan is reported to come with is inking capabilities-which will allow Windows 10 users with a stylus or pen to easily annotate a web page and send it along with written notes to friends or colleagues through the seamless integration of Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage. The shared notes will potentially be accessible cross-platform by any device/browser and collaborators will be able to make changes and share edits between their groups.

Just more integration then that Ms thinks we need and will use. More ways to find out what you do on the net.

I agree,, Apple is no better. Saying that internet providers are the same as well. a few years back you could just get a internet connection, at first being dial up and then Broadband. you just had your phone line, and internet connection.
Now, yo try and get a internet connection only from a provider and you will find it is difficult. Most want you to rent the phone line from them, in fact they insist on it. they also put a load of rubbish in with your connection .

Look at BT for a start, you will have our router, if you use it or not is a different thing, but you will still pay for it.
Oh we will give you some free online storage, which is not really free as we put the price up of your line rental.
some smart phone App to do with something called smart talk and lets not forget the fantastic free Wi-fi, which I expect 2% of their customer use. Oh yes, and their so called BT sports, whic is 99.9% football, so they may as welll call it BT football.
Then they will try and get you to spend more by offering their TV service.

Tall Talk is not much better, again you need to take their line rental out to be able to get their broadband. then we got their Talk Talk TV. they also got some smart phone app so you can answer your home phone anywhere you want. why would i want to do that? i have a mobile phone, if I am not home, then they can phone the mobile. If it is not urgent then it can wait until I get home. Also do not forget about their router, which again you have to pay for, even if you do not want it.

Sky is slightly better, they just more or less offer broadband, but you still need their phone lien and you got to pay for their router, and have little choice not to use it with them. i know they have Sky TV, but at least they do not bug you if you choose not to have it.

The only one of the larger providers that allow you to have broadband only and choose your own line rental is Plusnet. , but that belongs to BT.

What happened to the days when we just had a internet connection and that was it? All this triple and quad play I do not want it.

I have to confess I have my phone and broadband through Plusnet. They did supply a router though I am am still using it. (Another was ISP supplied on my second line, which I have since ceased.)

Back in the good old days I had a really slow connection, well everyone did, with a modem, then I progressed to ISND2. The good thing was I was able to dial in through lots of different companies, eg Freeserve, Tesco, Namesco etc depending on who was giving the best deal and working best at the time.

I found the modem in a box the other day (pre ISDN one) and nearly threw it away as I realised that I can no longer connect it to any of my computers as they do not have com ports. I suppose I should throw it away, but maybe the Spectrum in the attic still works, though I don't have an old style tv to act as the display - Times change.

I am looking at plusnet to be honest, only because they seem to offer the least and have nothing to keep nagging me to pay more for.
I have still got an old US Robotics courier modem, I doubt it will ever be used again.

I know things change, but not always for the best.

James?

It would be unlimited fibre and it is a 18 month contract, which is a bit annoying, I would prefer 12 months.

Not sure which way to go about this to be honest, either cancel my old provider now and go for Plusnet right away, or wait and get plusnet in the next couple of weeks.

I do not want to have too much of a cross over, wasting money and I do not really want to be without the net.

Money is the problem at the moment as from now on I will be on SSP for a couple of months and then got to apply for ESA or what ever it is called for another couple of months until I get back to work. I do have some money saved up, it is a good job I did.

As for IE, for some reason it stopped working on windows 10.

Ummm.

Plusnet do seem to be having niggling problems with FTTC at the moment. I have a feeling the frequent capacity increases have been stopped by the recently appointed CEO from BT frown.

It's still good enough to keep me, and you should be OK joining, but I have stopped claiming it is near-perfect on performance. Customer numbers now look to exceed 810k. 802k physically connected at the moment but not much traffic.

On the other hand, the capacity question could very well be BT Wholesale that has stopped adding exchange backhaul as readily. That has been talked about a fair bit since late last year.

Did you actually request to cancel? Are you planning to migrate to the new provider? If you have asked to cancel without using migration route then you may find you get charged and lose the Internet for a period of weeks whilst the cancel goes through and then the reordering.
