when he says repair, we dont mean the recovery console. You want to go to the stage where it says it's detecting previous installs, and then hit the relevent button (R i think) and windows will do the rest.

I have had a rather hectic weekend, so haven't done much with this problem until last night. I had a look at the link, and downloaded Emergency Boot CD. I booted with this and tried the Passowrd change part. Specified the Partition (only one on the disk) and entered c:\windows\system32\config as the directory to use. However when I selected the option to rest the passwords, I got an error saying that it couldn't find any.

Am I doing something wrong, or is the windows installation well and truly goosed?

Is it possible to setup the networking through the use of any of the tools so that I can get the dat off the machine? If not, does anybody have any links to the converter from the laptop hard drive to a standard PC hard drive?

If you have access to a normal working PC with a CD burner and have a valid copy of XP (home or pro) then I would suggest you download and make a BartPE CD, details found here http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

This has got me out of many a hole like yours in the past and can be used on any computer that can boot from a CD. You can also use the CD to access any built in network cards etc and copy files over to a network drive.

I've been on holiday, so only just tried this on the laptop but it worked a treat! I managed to get all of teh data I nedded and have now reinstalled Windows. The last thing that I need to do is restore the laptop owners email settings.

I have setup Outlook Express with her address book and emails. She is with Wanadoo, who are now Orange. I had a quick look on their website and the pop and smtp server names seem to have changed to reflect the change from Wanadoo to Orange change. Is this correct? I don't think that my friend would have changed these herself, so should I go with the servers published oon the Orange web site, or can somebody supply me with others? I don't yet have my friends user name and password (seeing her over the wekend) otherwise I would have tried this out.

Have I missed summat here? The Q is about missing user names at Windows Welcome screen.

Neither my wife's nor mine show same. It goes straight from Welcome into the bizzo, which suits us, most convenient. I thought this was a standard option? Or me up the stick again as usual? Bruce +++
