XP Security update won't install

XP reports that it cannot install a security update for .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 2 (KB974417).

I've looked at the KB but didn't understand any of it (so no change there, then).

Where do I go from here? Uninstall all of the .NET frameworks and start again, or is there an easier way?

The advice from Microsoft is to do it the hard way. Probably less trouble in the end than faffing around trying things that don't work.

I've seen your problem reported in another forum, and the poster cured it by uninstalling .net and reinstalling it.

also note, unless i am wrong your .net versions installed (if there are more than one) will all need to go back on, i.e say you had
.net v1
.net v2
.net v3.5
etc, if you want to get back to your old state all those versions would go back on, its not like other programs where the natural assumption is install version 3.5 and that will have all the stuff from v2, v1 etc nope
some of your programs may look for ver 1.1, some v2 and others v3.5 - if it cant find the one it needs you would need to install it, the other versions wont do

all of the above you might want to verify from that microsoft link as i dont have any knowledge on how the .net frameworks operate (and its too late at night for me to read that MS page!!! i need sleep)

Yes, that's correct. Programs that reference the v1 assemblies, etc., may need those assemblies to work. This was true with DLLs too, but they were handled far less sensibly when multiple versions were present.

I did the complete uninstall-reinstall job. It only took about half a day...... good job computers save us lots of time.
