problem with shtdown in windows 8

I cannot shutdown my pc windows 8 by using setting> power> shutdown option. When I press the option, nothing happens. I have to resort to press the switch the machine( press and hold).I have scanned the machine, it did not make any difference.Searching did not give me any credible solution. Perhaps I should wait for the 8.1 update!

That's just a setting, not an action. You need to press the ON/OFF switch, not the option, to activate the setting.

I use: charm setting> power> shutdown. I do not need to press the on/off button on the machine.
