Wanted : A Tool For Comparing Directories

I don't use RAID, I just directly back up important directories to a backup disk. Having noticed some file loss and data corruption recently, I want to be certain this is not being copied to my backups. So I need some sort of tool that will compare the content of directories and tell me what files are different. Preferably a freebie.

WinDiff is the best tool for comparing directories; it can be downloaded as part of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 32-bit Support Tools. It works fine on Win 7 64-bit.

DiffMerge, WinMerge, etc. are designed principally to compare different versions of program source files and the like.

The easy cheap way is to use a Command Window to issue the commands:

DIR directory_n /a/s >textfile_n

for each dir and then compare the textfiles.

Other than that WINDIFF is the way to go.

That's what I use. It needs a few options tweaking but otherwise a very good tool.
