ADSL2 Activation

[link to this post]

My Exchange was due to go RFS 31/03/2011. The BT Wholesale ADSL Checker says that my exchange is enabled for ADSL2 (it seems SamKnows hasn't been updated in a while).

How long is it between the exchange being activated and being able to change to the ADSL2 product in the Zen Portal? Will I receive an email when I can change?

The line will be migrated automatically for you. You will be notified before and after the migration.

Once the line has been migrated you will be able to choose ADSL2+.

As for the ADSL Checker, I use Kitz's website: http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

It can take up to 3 months to be activated on your line. BT migrate over batches of lines at a time. I think you can pay £15 to get your line activated in 1 week.

Once your specific line is activated you will get the email smile

Kitz still gives me the old 31/3/2011 date too, but both ADSL 24 , the BT checker , and Zen's checker here tells me my line is enabled.

Have a try

I'm still waiting to get an email though.

Hi 2pods,

Unfortunately Mick is off for a bit now on holiday so is unlikely to pick up on your PM straight away.

If you can let me know your exchange code, I can see where things stand for you smile.

Brian

Morning 2pods,

Hope you had a good weekend.

Mixed news on this I'm afraid.

We have tried to migrate our customers on your exchange on two occasions, so far without success (April & May periods). The exchange is 21CN enabled though.

We are now moving towards the June period where we will again attempt to get your exchange in the bulk migrations process.

I think if we fail at the third attempt we will have to look at alternative options for you and others at that exchange.

We are trying frown.

Many thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian

Thanks for getting back to me.

Could you tell me what the problems were in migration, and what the alternative options would be ?

Certainly doesn't sound good frown

Hi Peter,

Can do.

Bit of back ground info first. Apologies if you already know this!

Since we starting taking various 21CN products from BT Wholesale which allow us to reach WBC enabled exchanges, we've been carefully moving our customer base from the IPStream product to WBC. We do this by telling BT Wholesale which exchanges and volume per exchange we would like to migrate over in any given month, on a month by month basis. This information is combined with everyone else who is running a similar exercise and sent to Openreach who work out how they can meet the demands placed upon them for that defined period.

Once they've worked it out they tell their customers (In our case BT Wholesale) what they can actually achieve against what was asked for. BT Wholesale then split that up between their customers.

We take this information and start selecting services to be moved and kick off our notification process to customers. All being well, you are then moved in the early hours of the morning on the advertised date.

So where has this gone wrong for you?

To qualify for this process, each exchange must have a request for a minimum of 10 migrations at the exchange AND THEN a minimum of 10 migrations orders placed at that exchange on any given day. This number is entirely separate to the migrations of service between providers; if you were moving a service over to Zen for example.

This means that where we have a desire to move customers, there are two potential failure points where we are wholly dependant on the minimum of 10 being made up by others. Unfortunately at your exchange we don't have 10 customers of our own frown

Now, your exchange has only recently been enabled. This means that when we submitted our request to move you, the exchange wasn't enabled but would be for the period we wanted. Unfortunately it doesn't look like anyone else did this. As a result our attempts did not succeed.

However for our June forecast, it appears others have jumped on board so we've got past the first hurdle this time laugh.

All being well, in a few weeks time we are told we can go ahead and place orders to move services at your exchange. BUT in order to qualify for the process a minimum of 10 orders must be placed on that exchange at the same time we are there. Given others have signalled their intent to also move services at your exchange, it is highly likely we'll see success. It isn't guaranteed though and we'll only really get an indication of the chance of failure 5 working days before the move frown.

An alternative option is available but sits outside of this process and admittedly does cost us extra. However it is more a case of considering the impact on the remaining services than looking at a single service in isolation. This is why I said earlier we were carefully moving services between networks.

Bit of a long explaination, hope it helps?

many thanks,
Brian

Thanks Brian

That was really helpful, as I don't really know what goes on with this compared to the old adslmax exchange upgrades.

So it may still not happen frown

Could you, or some other Zen person, let me know if it succeeds ?

re: the alternative,. Could the extra be paid by myself, or is it a vast amount ?

Hi 2pods,

Back now smile.

There is a chance it may not happen in the preferred way. I'll keep an eye out for your exchange and let you know how things are coming along. Expect to have some news on this in the next week or so.

As for the alternative and costs, on a singular basis it isn't too much. It is more the impact on other things really.

My suggestion would be to wait for the outcome from the latest attempt. I'll catch up with you about how we can proceed if another way is required.

We'll work something out smile.

many thanks,
Brian

Hi 2pods,

I have some good news!

I'm working through our migrations plan for June and we have the option to migrate services at your exchange mid way through the month.

Not 100% guaranteed just yet for reasons provided previously but we're over the first big hurdle. One more to go! laugh

Many thanks,
Brian

Hello Brian

I'm kind of hijacking this thread now, but I made it and completely forgot about it till now!

Interesting posts in reply to 2pods. Can I PM you my deets so you can check if the situation is the same at my exchange? I'd almost guarantee you won't have 10 customers on my exchange!

Thanks

Re: ADSL2 Activation

[re: BCS] [link to this post]

Well, it happened this morning in the early hours, line moved to 21N, and everything is working again.

However, even though my router stats state a sync of 8096 (it's been rock solid since 25th of March when I bought it), Zen's line data says sync is 7968 from 4.00am this morning.

As I'm still on maxADSL, has the line switchover time knocked my BRAS profile down ?

If so, I would be better waiting for it to rise again before changing to "up to 20mbps" via the website ?

Also when would be the optimal time to change my Netgear from "Auto" to "ADSL2+" without generating a sync error ?

Line data reports the lower end of the band you sync in. In your case 7968-8096

Leave it at Auto and see what it does when you transfer to ADSL2+

Had the email saying it was moved onto ut20mbps overnight, but mistakenly rebooted the router, as that was what the email said. Then realised it had already sorted itself out.
Doh !

So is there anything I can do this end to stop the BT stuff seeing my rebooting mistakes as a drop over the 10 day training period ?

Just like everyone else, I'd like the highest sync I could get.
