Is "Mail Washer" the only answer?

I have nothing against "Mail Washer" but is it the only pebble on the beach? Freebie stuff anyway!

My wife's pc is inundated with spam lately. On Zen ADSL Lite she runs XP Professional & OE6 (as I do). I have downloaded her the freebie version of "Mail Washer" as the better one costs $40 which is about

Hi,

I've personally found k9 to be excellent for filtering spam on a single PC, and as a bonus it's freeware:

I use ePrompter. You can view and delete mail before it is downloaded from the server. http://www.eprompter.com

Hi Bruce,

I use SpamBayes. It takes a wee bit of preparation (i.e. you need to save some spam in a seperate folder, and save some good mail somewhere else so it can learn what you think is spam and what you think is not), but after that it works just fine.

I get upwards of 50 SPAM messages a day, and rarely does SpamBayes get it wrong. It learns as it goes, and has a 'Junk Suspects' folder where it puts something it thinks is spam but isn't sure. You can then check and if its not, recover it, and it learns a bit more each time. It never deletes anything but moves the spam to the Junk mail folder, there you can delete it or recover it again.

Oh, it's free too

Cheers
Ruz

It's pointless blocking spam sender's addesses. I've even had spam which perported to come from me, because spammers randomly choose email addresses from the mail list for the "from" field. The majority of spam is sent by people with PC's infected by viruses, who are not even aware that it's being sent from their PC.

This is an interesting thread because I use Mailwasher yet I find that the text filters (for subject, message body, etc) don't work with HTML based emails which is a bit of a fundamental flaw! So all these recommendations for other products are very useful indeed.

In reply to:

I think that's often deliberate. If your mail server bounces it, the bounce, which often contains the message, gets sent to you, and so you get the message anyway!

Spammers quite often use my domain in the FROM field. Recently it got so bad that I was being inundated with "can't deliver" notifications of emails sent to non-existant addresses "from" my domain, that I now filter my email, so only certain prefixes @mydomain that I use actually get through.
