High Sync / Low SNR....connection problems (long r

[link to this post]

I had a problem with my connection for 3 months between September and November when my speeds would be perfect throughout the day (750K +) and drop like a stone at night (between 300K and 100K). My SNR would be around 6db and at night drop to about 4. I would be sync'ing at 8128kbps at all times but my connection at night would be terrible, dropping packets all over the shop and sometimes losing sync and losing connection. General browsing would be rubbish

After a ton of calls to tech support I finally got BT to do something and they raised my SNR margin. I would now sync at between 6500 and 7500kbps and my SNR would be around 12db. My speeds would be constant whatever time of day it was (just over 600K) and be perfect with no dropped packets and staying up for weeks at a time before I'd reboot my router.

This morning I checked my router after it'd been up for the last 12 days and I noticed I was sync'ing at 8128kbps again. Checked my SNR and it was down to 5.8db. At the moment my SNR has dropped to 1.8db and I'm getting dropped packets and slow browsing now and again >:(

The point of this long boring ramble is, how do I get my SNR raised perminantly?

btw, I'm running a Netgear DG834GT and I'm about 2 miles from my exchange (Pontypridd)

If your SNR has dropped so dramatically, it suggests there may be a problem with the line. How is the voice quality, is it OK? Have you tried testing the connection from the test point within the master socket?

yeah, the line quality is fine. I've tried it in the test point a few times when I had the problem orginally but it made no difference. I also tried 3 different filters and 3 different routers

Sounds like my issue, voice quality is fine, no crackling, but at night sub 1db noise margin..........not that my router disconnects (i'm on 2mb) but it hangs on.

How do i get this issue fixed?

Update:

Just checked my router after getting up and the SNR was around 9db.

Rebooted the router and it was sync'ing again at 8128kbps, SNR - 6db when it came back up. Now after 20mins it's dropped to 2.5 - 3db.

Interesting to see the number of people with this problem, myself included.

My SNR would typically drop about 8-10dB after about 6pm until the morning, and like you, when I reboot the SNR remains higher for a short period before dropping. This led to lots of resyncs when I was on max.

As a result I had to migrate out to IDNet onto a fixed speed 2Mb circuit, and after getting some advice from both support and this forum, I fitted a filtered faceplate. (My router was previously connected to one of four extension sockets).

I'm still seeing the SNR drop with the faceplate filtered, but not as drastically - typically about 6-8dB now, except the figure will now jump back up to near its daytime value e.g. in the day I get 23, and in the evening it will sometimes drop down to as low as 15, then back up 18-19, drop again, back up and then to full the next morning.

Same happens in the test socket with me so all I can guess is it is outside interference e.g. streetlighting or perhaps crosstalk from a neighbour's line.

I'm not convinced by street lighting though because my line runs underground.

Not streetlighting with my either as it runs above the ground down our back lane which isn't lit

Just got off the phone with tech support and they've raised another fault with BT to raise my SNR.

The guy on the phone, whos name I can't remember, said that usually when your SNR is raised it's raised permanantly so it shouldn't drop back to what it was.

Don't know how true this is so maybe somebody could clarify this?

Recent, similar, but currently inconclusive (imo) discussion here.

What other equipment is running from the phone line...?

Dialup modem?
Sky box?
Second Sky box*?
Phone?
others?

Simon

*BT tests showed that my second Sky receiver was overloading my line.
