Connection problems, speeds problems, you name it!

Got activated for Zen 8000 Pro on Mon 18 June, regraded from Home 1000, which we had been on since Feb 2005 - SNR 22dB Attenuation 57dB. Currently synching at 3456kbps, downloading (or not) at 135kbps. Spoke to Zen support as had been synching at 3Mb and downloading at 2Mb on Monday. They said that the synch rate must have plummeted and a new profile had been set to 135kbps. Don't understand why it had been set so low. Zen support said we had to wait 3 days for it to change. We've been having a problem with a noisy phone line, reported it to BT and an engineer is coming Weds a.m. Hopefully the engineer will be able to sort the line out.

FYI stats are as follows:

Downstream Rate: 3456 kbps, Upstream Rate: 448 kbps
Noise Margin: 6.0 dB (Downstream), 20.0 dB (Upstream)
Attenuation: 58.2 dB (Downstream), 31.5 dB (Upstream)
Output Power: 17.8 dBm (Downstream), 12.2 dBm (Upstream)

BT Speed Tester reports:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3456 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 121 kbps

Grateful for any help, advice. Many thx.

You need to measure the stats more than once, and at different times of the day and night. ADSL Max is notorious for dives in the SNR caused by picked up noise, and this is usually worse during the hours of darkness.

zebedeee thanks for reply. Have monitored at different times of day/night and lose connection at varying times - no set period. Yes, have noticed drops in SNR at night from 6 down to -2 but still had a connection last time this happened. After saying that though the same thing can happen anytime during the day.

BT phone engineer came this a.m. and the noise on the line had disappeared - he said he could fine nothing wrong with either the line or our equipment (we have 2 phone extensions which are unused). He checked around the filtered faceplate with a meter and said there was a short circuit - "quarter loop on the base plate without customer equipment fitted". He rang a BT broadband colleague who suggested that the filter faceplate is faulty. The only thing is we have the same adsl probs when connected to test socket only. A fault has been raised with Zen support.

We live out in the sticks and have overhead cables, both electricity and phone. Have noticed that both cables are quite close together, no more than 2ft apart at one point. I am no expert but would think that the electricity cable would generate quite a lot of noise. Wonder how feasible it would be to get BT, assume retail, to move phone line away from elec cable and position it other side of house? Noticed that other houses' phone cables are not so close to elec cable.

Thx for help.

This sound like it could be a weather related problem, with the amount of rain that

Well BT Broadband Engineer supposed to be coming Mon a.m. and it has been requested that he fit an RF filter and check E and D siode(?) This could possibly be where the problem lies as this is in the area where the BT Phone Engineer found a short circuit..... will post back with results.

JIC, thanks for reply. Haven't really noticed any difference with bad weather, only if thunderstorm and/or lightening and then all equipment is unplugged.

If anybody has had similar problems and found a solution, would really like to hear.

Thanks for help.

UPDATE

Engineer came and he was very thorough - he checked out D and E sides and found perishing cables and joint in the E side (from Exchange to 1st cabinet). Another engineer is being booked to carry out the work. He did fit the RF filter but haven't noticed any difference. Hopefully once the cables/joint are replaced or whatever they do, will have a good working connection and the signal won't keep disappearing. Will post back.
