Speeding fine

[link to this post]

Another speed issue but one that I don't understand? I have been with Zen for 14 months on 8000 pro and have ALWAYS had excellent speed results. The speed testers have shown that my download speed has been between 6300kbps and 6800kbps during this time. Zen's own test files (zero bin and non zero bin etc) have always downloaded at about 840-850kbps.

On 21 July this year, I changed to 8000 active because I was not even using anywhere near 20gb so thought I would save a tenner. But since this has changed, my download spoeds have been cut in half. My download speeds struggle to reach 3000kbps and browsing is of course noticeably slower. Zen's test files download at around 400kbps. It is almost as though something is putting the brakes on and restricting the speed from going any faster!

I am still constantly synched at the FULL rate according to my router stats and zen technical support confirm the same at the exchange, only suggesting that contention could be an issue. If only my permitted usage has changed from 50gb on pro to 20gb on active, why would contention now suddenly be an issue? Why do I only now have speed issues since changing product?

I wish now that I had just left things as they were

The regrade and the affect on speed may just be coincidence. Can you post your line stats? What results do you get from a BT speedtest?

Hi there,

The only thing that changes when you switch between Lite, Active of Pro is the download allowance provided with the product. No other changes take place at Zen or at BT.

How soon after the change did the problem begin?

What is the status of your exchange (http://status.zensupport.co.uk/exchanges/) ?

What is your line profile set at in the 'Line Data' section of the Customer Portal (http://www.zensupport.co.uk/knowledgebase/article.aspx?id=10593) ?

kind regards,
Phil D.Long

As soon as the regrade took place on 21 July 2007 browsing was noticably slower which was what made me start doing speed tests.

I am on the Lowestoft exchange which shows as green.

Under the line profile at zen it just says there are no records to display.

Since posting original message, speed testing shows things are back to normal now (weird)!. Here are the results from the BT tester

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6744 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Looks like there's nothing wrong with your line or your download speed if that's the BT test result. Is everything working again?

Some speed testers get very busy and sometimes show poor download speeds. The only reliable ones I have found is the BT speedtester and Giganews.

Hi, yes all is working as it was before now. Since posting original message speed tests show all is well again (weird), not too sure what happened? Thanks everyone for your help. That BT tester is a real improvement on the old one!

Hi, yes i think you are probably right as THIS one seems to be showing incorrect slow speeds at the moment!

Yes I used to regularly test with the BBMax tester but found afternoons and evenings to be slow but other testers showing normal speeds.
