Speed suddenly failed

[link to this post]

My router is connected and synced to 5460000 and has been up for days with no problems. I generally attained d/l speeds appropriate to my sync speed. Suddenly this evening I noticed a big slowdown when downloading, and on running speed tests everywhere I am now not able to d/l faster than 1mb.

Thinking my PC may somehow have been infected with something, I connected a laptop to the router via LAN and it shows the same speed problem.

I switched routers, it syncs to a similar speed 4948000 and... can still only d/l at 1mb or under.

Any ideas anyone?

Edit: My upload speed is actually faster than my download speed! That's a first smile

You need to run the BTspeed test and post the results.

you seem to have lossed half a meg, which might just be because of the chip inside the router or line noise from the time if resync. The 1mb speed could be a recent line sync event which caused your BRAS to fall to 1000kbps and is needing at least 3 days to recover, or traffic shapping via your ISP.

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1509 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 1000-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5487 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1094 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 4000 Kbps

lol - it's "acceptable", I guess that's ok then.

Also, I have twice spoken to Zen about this.

First response was: It's your router.

So I got a new router.

The new response is: It's your router.

You truly are the new Nildram, Zen.

Oh dear.

Are you on a leafy exchange, or on the Isle of dogs ?

Might be hot VP's on the BT side

On a 4mb profile only getting 1.5 - Zen should really take this on and look at it for you. Re raise the ticket with that BT speed test and see what they do.

Do you know any one on your road who's a BTWS customer for there DSL who can have a chek, that may help work out if its a Zen or BTWS problem.

If its the latter, then a move to another ISP who use BT won't help you - An LLU provider is a differnet matter and I'd say start having a look who can provide service there.

To be fair Zen are taking another look - after trying new filters and then both routers on the test socket with the same results. I am to call back tomorrow so they can possibly raise it with BT.

I don't know anyone on the street, so I can't check that, but if the problem isn't resovled soon I'll be moving to a non-BT provider. I work from home and depend on decent speeds so I have little other option.

And in doing so will be free of all the DLM and profiles that come with it.

IamQ, how do I go about moving to an LLU service? There are several available in my area but I'm somewhat clueless as to exactly how to the service is implemented. For example, to be on LLU do I also need to change my phone provider from BT? If I sign-up with an LLU provider do I need to specify to them that I do not want broadband through a BT line?

The best way is to pick the ISP you want to goto (Sky, BE, etc)
Get your MAC from your current ISP
Give that to your gaining ISP

Job done.

When you call up your gaining ISP ask and make sure there putting you there LLU service and NOT a BT service.

You don't need to do anyting with your phone line, LLU for DSL is lifed off at the exchange and won't upset your voice service

You can leave your voice service with BT without any problems

LLU provision involves a re-jumper and as such some down time once the order goes through and you are due to be connected.

You will need an ADSL2+ router if you don't already have one - some of the ISP's provide there own with the service (Sky for example)

Have a look about on this forum, there is lots to read and choices to be made, if you want some more help once you have picked the gaining ISP then let us know.

LLU works in the same way as the BTWS service (as far as the exchange goes) as in the service is terminated onto another providers MSAN's rather than BT's. Is the ISP who runs the MSANS and the connectivity back from the exchange to there core network and out to the wider internet rather then BT handing it off to them.

The kitz.co.uk website has lots of info on it which may help.
