Kelly Communications

[link to this post]

Young guy came to install FTTC. He changed the position of the master socket and did what he had to do. He went off to the cabinet to do some work, and came back a short time later. He asked me for the router I had been sent and connected it up to the new master socket.

He seemed unhappy so I asked if there was a problem. "The router won't sync". Says he. I'm not surprised says I, it needs a fibre modem. Oh he said and trotted off to his van. On his return and with everything synced he admitted that it was his first Plusnet install. He was unaware that he had to provide a modem, as Sky, BT, TT provide a combined modem and router. smile

My Kelly FTTC install went quite well(glad I had it before self installs), I also ended up with an ECI. Might be worth getting a cheap HG612 off eBay and unlocking for the stats, always useful when things go pear shaped.

Sync'ed at 75Mbps?

IP Profile from the BT Wholesale Test Further Diagnostics, multiplied by 1.033, gives you the sync within a few kbps.

There are not 3 days of DLM to go. It runs continuously. The BT Wholesale one doesn't even directly control the line speed, unlike on ADSLx.

3 Days ? Openreach DLM is always active on FTTC or do you mean the mis information spouted by certain ISP's about there being a 10 day period ?
which is not so on FTTC, So the speed that you have had since connected, will stay as is unless you have a line fault or are affected by crosstalk etc in the future causing dlm to intervene

Thanks for the info. In that case Plusnet have misinformed their FTTC customers.

5. Dynamic Line Management (DLM)

DLM is an automated system that manages the performance of your broadband service.

For 10 days after broadband activation, DLM will test your line to find the best balance between speed and reliability. Speed during this time can vary and your broadband may drop out occasionally (it should return immediately).

After 10 days, small changes in speed can occur (as DLM reacts to changing conditions) but your line speed should remain relatively stable.

In the case of FTTC, yes. In the case of ADSL there is (or was) some element of truth in it.

In the event of problems (e.g. line errors or frequent disconnections), DLM will reduce your sync to a level that allows for a stable connection. This allows you to continue using your broadband during problems, albeit at a lower connection speed.

Once the problem is fixed, your sync speed should return to normal quickly. When your sync speed returns the IP profile youll receive depends on the broadband product:

21CN products: the IP Profile is calculated each time your line syncs
20CN products: the IP Profile will be recalculated after your line is deemed stable (up to 3 days without disconnection)

BT send us reports of profile changes several times a day, so speeds should return to normal once we've updated our system with the new profile (usually within 24 hours).

DLM is the main reason that we advise you to leave your router switched on, as turning it off frequently can cause DLM to think there's a problem and reduce your speed.

Remember: DLM reacts to problems on your line rather than fixing them. If your IP profile or sync speed fluctuate regularly, there may be a line fault or something causing interference. See our Broadband speed tips guide for help tracking down the problem.

You are lucky: my cousin has just got TT FTTC and all he got from TT was a modem/router, filters etc. and no engineer (not even Kellys) to check for sync from his house. He only knew that vdsl was activated after his adsl dropped sync and shortly thereafter connecting up the modem/router ("Super Router") on the day of the planned switch. However he is/was a TT full LLU user - guess that's what they call a "self install" and a good thing he didn't have any problems!

Or if it's just that it's found it's stable speed for your line length and condition, it's worth having so that you can keep a record of what it should look like so you can see what is going pear-shaped when or if it stops working as it should.

It's always handy to have some baseline readings to compare with when you are trying to find out what is wrong.

I should have asked for a HG612 at the installation but, at the time, the consensus was you should match the modem to the cabinet(mine's ECI) - so I just assumed I should leave it to the engineer.
