BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test

[link to this post]

Following on from the HH5 messing up my line thread i have noticed there is still something wrong.

Using the BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test site i get 75Mbit without question, every time no problems at all, using every other speedtest site on the planet (including the TBB one) i get 38Mbit. My upload is 10Mbit no matter where i test. I also tried downloading some big files and never got over 38Mbit so whats going on?

Stats are:

6. Data rate: 20000 / 79995
7. Maximum data rate: 30784 / 108023

Downstream: 78.12 Mbps
Upstream: 19.53 Mbps

Somewhere in BT's system it thinks you are on a 40/10 product, and the BT Wholesale download is somehow bypassing that part of the system. The other speed testers can't do that bypass so hit the cap.

What are the last two lines about in your post?

Which Infinity product are you on? Check in "My BT" on bt.com

The cheaper product limits your speeds, but the link from your HH to the cabinet is always at the best it can do, the speed limit is later in the network.

If that is coming from the HH5 it is very odd.

If it is coming from the Further diagnostics of the BTW Broadband Performance Test, that would be the first ever such reported.

For the two to be different would, to say the least, be interesting.

I suggest that the test would give 77.43Mbps/20Mbps. Unless it gives approximately 40/10 which would explain your problem.

As we have not seen upstream "real" IP Profiles before, I can only work from the downstream 79995kbps. The calculation for that on FTTC is 0.9679 x sync, equalling 77.43Mbps. The downstream one you have given is approximately 0.9769 x sync. Note the central two digits are transposed.

Your upstream figure is exactly 0.9769 x sync.

If you feel like it, please run that test smile. Don't bother with all the red instructions, we aren't bothered about the speed.

I had the 10Mbps upstream issue for a while ... had three or four long visits from BT Techs who worked with 2nd and 3rd line support. Something finally gave and it went from 9.xx to 19.xx instantaneously. I now get around 18.xx to 19.00 on speedtests except on the TBB one which seems to take time to ramp up.

No one at BT can actually explain what the problem was or what cured it and there are a few cases around that have suffered it.

Pretty clear, you're syncd at the max (80/20) but you're only getting 40/10 throughput.
As you're paying for Infinity 2 and its worked before, this is a fault.
For some reason you're on the wrong BTretail product/profile.

OK. The difference in the IP Profiles is clear. Well done BT, LOL. My feeling is whoever twiddled the HH5 firmware has got something wrong, but that's not really the issue now we know there isn't either a 40 or a 10 floating around in there.

I'm tending again to my thoughts about there being a 40/10 setting somewhere, with the BTW speed test bypassing that on download but not on upload. That possibility doesn't seem at all odd to me.

My "other place" idea about the IP Profile stems from something not many will know about, and I only know a little. That being that (on ADSLx) when Plusnet's copy of the IP Profile gets out of step with the BTW speed test value, (PN lower than BTW), correcting the Plusnet version doesn't always fix the problem.

Plusnet often then run another test which they say "shows an imbalance" in the system. The only two places I can think of holding the BTW value are the BRAS and the DSLAM/MSAN, with the BTW speed test reporting only one of those. Plusnet are then able to sort things out.

This cannot, on the face of it, occur on FTTC as BTW don't control the DSLAM. Maybe I just destroyed my case frown. Maybe not. I never did get Plusnet to say where this third copy of the IP Profile is held.

We do know that we sometimes get weird low speeds on FTTC, even though the sync and IP Profile looks OK, and only after engineer intervention and getting something reset does it clear.

Yes, that's because the wholesale test bypasses the ISP side profile doesn't it? I thought we'd seen that when PlusNet's profile was wrong, the wholesale test showed the capability of the sync, not the throughput to the ISP.

yeah made no difference.

BT have swapped me out a HH5 and this one seems a bit better, the only speed test giving constant results is the BT one all the others are giving results up and down like a yoyo, i have given up TBH ill just wait until a firmware comes out and if there is no improvement im flogging the HH5 and buying HH4 as that was rock solid.

I give up this "new" HH5 has done a couple of random reboots and my speed is a rock solid 40/10 again on everything other than the BT speed test which returns 75/9

I have downloaded a couple of Linux distros just to see and the speeds never exceeded 40Mbit.

BT were massively helpful by saying the speed is fine, its your PC. By that reasoning it is also 4 laptops, 4 smartphones (2 of which are wireless ac) and 4 android tablets that are all bolloxed, cheers BT.
