Problems just keep continuing

[link to this post]

It seems that my BT Broadband connection is stuck in a vicious circle.

For the last few months it seems that I get a few days at a decent speed, then a few days where I can barely connect and then when it comes back on it's at a pathetically slow speed.

It always seems that when I complain to BT, my speed improves a bit for a wee while then I start having problems again.

Am I being paranoid? It's driving me mad.

Here is the results from the BT Speedtester from a few minutes ago:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 192 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 112 kbps

If I try to download something just now, it doesn't go above 6kbs.

Router being used right now is a Thomson Speedtouch 585.

The stats from it are:

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 13.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 63.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 13.0 / 9.0

boy your IP Profile is low at 135kbps but it seems your only syncing at 192kbps so thats the reason why your throughput was 112kbps.

your SNR is not to bad at 9db but you must be on a long line at 63db line attenuation ? i'm 5kms away and mine is 53db and i get 3000kbps reliably

whats the history on your line on what you had previously then before it went slow

In terms of line stats, I'm not sure about what they were, but in terms of download speeds, I was getting 60kbps for a few days after I complained, then it had a few days of not connecting much at all, and then I get this current awful connection speeds.

Should ditching BT Broadband when 21CN is activated on the exhange next Monday make any difference?

A postcode check gives this about distance:

You are on the Aberdeen Kincorth exchange.

You are around 2.96 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies).

I think the best advice to start with is,

Every device needs filtered - sky, modems, oil tank diallers, etc.
Take a good, long look at all the phone wiring in the house.
if you have an NTE5 socket, remove the front part and try the router in the test socket.
Check for miswired setups - are all your extensions dead when the NTE5 front plate is removed?
Any hardwired phone devices, eg, alarm diallers?

(apologies if you've heard it all before, but with no other background that's yer starting point)

The telephone line is not going to change so won't make any difference

All devices are filtered.

No idea where the test socket is.

Tried it with all phones etc removed and it doesn't improve things.

you need to find the master socket i.e probably the one nearest to the front door take the fron cover off and bottom right should be a point to plug your filter in

The last time I tried this, they were all just normal sockets.

My router is plugged into the one the last BT engineer who came out tested the line on.

He said there was no fault on the line (despite what the indian call centre were claiming) and he managed to connect at 1mb, something that I am never able to do.

"The last time I tried this, they were all just normal sockets."

That could well be the problem. With all the house wiring included, the signal will be reflecting back on itself and causing all kinds of mayhem. And that's without the possibility of a wiring fault in the house.

If there isn't an NTE5, it would be well worth getting one fitted. Once you have that, you have a clear separation between "your" wiring and "theirs".

On such a long line, it really would be worth fitting a filtered faceplate. But first things first, try and find an NTE5...

I seem to remember the last time I had these problems I went through all of the different sockets and none looked like that.

Is the BT Broadband Accelerator any good?
