288 is the (current) maximum number of connections in an FTTC cabinet.

One lives and learns smile

(Those of us who don't already know all there is to know, anyway)

I doubt if my cabinet is that size, I don't think there are that many premises within a reasonable range... otoh I've got two lines (one not in use) and I don't suppose I'm the only one, so maybe it is.

I would have thought it was a single line card. RJ will be able to help us with that.

So they aren't all 288-enabled?
I didn't even know some were tongue

I wasn't paying that much attention tbh, I'm sure he didn't use the number "288" but he might have said "a couple of hundred".

I think it actually depends on cabinet, an area not far from me on my travels work related has new FTTC cabinets springing up. I may be stupid saying this but ive seen 2 physically different sized cabinets, no idea if that equates to how many connections each one does but thats the only reason i can think of them being different in casing size.... Maybe im just being dumb and not thinking technically but too logically crazy

That's interesting! Photos would be great smile.

Are there random numbers of each, or mainly one size, and any idea how they compare to pictures we have seen?

Maybe the bigger ones are armour-plated for social reasons tongue.

Ill try to remember to take a camera next time im in that area smile

One of the boxes id estimate from glance is about 5ft tall and is almost cube like in appearance. (Not a perfect cube shape but close)

The other is 1-2ft shorter and more rectangular (if that makes sense, similar to some old style cabinets but slightly wider) in appearance.

Both are new to the area, so i assume they are for FTTC, some are positioned right next to old cabinets, some are a few metres further along the road. Most are within a few feet of current cabinets though.

The larger (cube like) ones seem to be in roads which have more homes than the shorter cabinets (that could just be my assumption though and totally wrong, i didnt spend time driving down each road near a cabinet obvioously)

You could be right, internally they may well be the same i hadnt thought about the technical side of things.

Totally possible its just the cabinet which is a physical different size but the guts are the same, one type may just be toughened in some manner due to being an area of vandalism, or even in an area where cabinets have previously been subject to other damage.

I know many years ago i lived on a busy main road, there was a 4 car pile up, one car which swerved crashed straight into a BT cabinet, a few weeks later they replaced it with something which looked alot stronger, almost tank proof like in appearance. Maybe they are doing something similar with FTTC cabinets!!

I imagine even if one cabinet serves more people than the other design the tech inside is basically the same, cant imagine them to be vastly different.

Though it is possible that 2 x 288 may be in the bigger ones. Or they are servicing several of the smaller ones and need something different.

Does one like this, though I appreciate one green cabinet may look much like another.

Yes very similar though i didnt see the door side of it. But yep that looks like one of the cab types ive seen.
The others are more cube like (fatter/wider) than those and slightly taller.

@RobertoS, possibly, though unless there is alot of room in the smaller cabinet type (IE the one the rogan8 links to above) i wouldnt think the other (cube like) type could hold double the amount, maybe its basically the same but just laid out slightly differently inside?

EDIT: The best i can find to describe the second cube like type is they look similar to this...
http://www.occamnetworks.com/products/rtc/
only without that part on the side, obviously green, possibly taller and have a slanted top like the other rogan linked to. but dimension wise width and depth, (the best you can tell from a scaled pic anyway) very similar.
