Billion Bipac 7800DXL. Have been having a problem with a Vodafone sure signal box, so decided to double filter the router connection to the phone socket. The router wouldn't connect. The DSL light flashed constantly, no Internet light, no internet. Tried three different new filters, still the same problem.
Reverted to the single filter set up, immediate internet connection.

|
|
|
The router connection should not be filtered, it won't work. The filter removes the broadband signal.
|
|
|
you did leave the router in the first filter and double filter the voice only ?
not sure why this would affect suresignal box ?

By router connection I meant the DSL cable from router to filter.

You should only need to double filter the voice signal. The router always connects to the ADSL port of the filter nearest the phone socket.

I don't have a phone plugged in to this phone socket, just a filter. The router dsl cable was connected via this filter. I plugged this filter into another filter and plugged the second filter into the phone socket. I thought that should be OK?
The sure signal has been dropping calls from two phones, but not from a third. Both phones the calls are dropping from are under 12 months old and on the latest firmware.
I thought I would try double filtering to see if that would help. Obviously I've got it wrong.

Thanks. I realise now I got it wrong.

I don't have a phone plugged in to this phone socket, just a filter. Then you don't need to double filter this phone socket. You can only try to double filter the other phone sockets from which you are losing the sure signal.
EDIT: Just found out Sure Signal is nowt to do with landline phones but just mobiles . It is on the ADSL side of the connections. Therefore double filtering will not solve your problem; it only applies to landline voice.

Have you tested both filters individually? One might be borked.
|
|

filters are for phones, the broadband connection is a passthrough. By plugging the second filer into the filtered outlet of the first you blocked the ADSL signal in the first one.
Suresignal sends data over your broadband, if phones have issues with it then it's wireless side or ADSL capacity as much as the ADSL connection quality.
Double filtering of a sky box or other noisy phone thingy works, but if the ADSL router is connected at the same point it must come out of the first filter closest to the wall socket.

Never mind, think positive!! You've now proved that your filters work!

I've double filtered the only phone I have, and got carried away.
Thanks everyone for your help. [Runs away and hides in wardrobe]

It's not supposed to work double filtered that's why
Any more than one filter will stop the internet working
You can double filter phones and sky boxes though
|
|
|
|
Just so you know a filter blocks out broadband signals on the phone side
So when you plug a filter into the socket, the phone side no longer has broadband signals
Now plug a filter into this filter... Well the broadbands been removed by the first filter so it won't work on the second one now.
Broadband only ever works on the adsl side of the first filter
The other socket on the filter has no broadband signal.

Billion Bipac 7800DXL. Have been having a problem with a Vodafone sure signal box,
The SureSignal needs to make an IPsec VPN connection through to vodafone. You might want to check the Billion config to see if it has any VPN passthru features that need to be on, or if are on, try with them off!
Also disable any additional firewall settings you might have set.

Thanks for that. I didn't really expand on the problem. The sure signal works fine between my house and Vodafone and works perfectly with my Galaxy S2. However with two other Galaxy phones, a 'Young' and a mini2, the calls are dropped and the 3g light flashes on the sure signal unit.
Vodafone support have been very good but it's just a baffling problem. Putting my SIM in the other phones makes no difference, the calls are still dropped.

|

the calls don't connect or drop part way ?
did you register their numbers for your SureSignal ? though your SIM should overcome that (I think)
My 3G light flashes green slowly when making a successful call. Sagem vertical book style unit.

Strange. In my area we get a weak 2G signal from Voda, so I often have to turn "airplane mode" on, then off, to force the phone to give up the 2G and move to the strong 3G from the suresignal. Once the phone is connected to the SureSignal its fine.

the calls don't connect or drop part way ? Drop part way through. Yet my Galaxy S2 doesn't drop at all.
All phones registered correctly. Confirmed by the Vodafone txt message.
Alcatel-Lucent v2 sure signal displays a white 3g light when a signal is being transmitted, and also a white 'phone' light when a call is in progress. When calls are dropped, sometimes only the 3g light flashes. Other times both lights flash.

The 'problem' phones connect to sure signal without any problems, and stay connected. Even when the calls are dropped and sure signal has stabilised, the phones reconnect OK.

Strange indeed. A complete guess as Vodafone don't publish how the SS works (for obvious reasons) - I believe it makes an IPsec VPN from the device to Voda's network - it might be making multiple IPsec sessions. Some routers don't like this as we found with Cisco client and remote workers. ??

In which case wouldn't that affect all phones?
|
|
|
|
I would be really tempted to get a replacement from vodafone.
It sounds more like a faulty unit than an issue with your broadband.
As one phone works that rules out the setup
Two dont work however. I would tell vodafone it's not working on any phones and surely they'd have to send out a replacement unit?
At least that's one more thing ruled out then.
|
|
|
It's out of warranty, and would therefore cost me £100 for the new 'Plug in' version. Apparently tracerts, pings and download speeds are well within tolerances. The unit was 'resynced' at their end which forces any outstanding updates to the unit when I did a factory reset.
So everything seems hunky dory from the unit to Vodafone. Luckily the Galaxy mini2, my wifes phone, actually gets a reasonable network signal at home. I've removed her phone from the sure signal and it hasn't dropped a call as yet The Galaxy Y is now surplus to requirements.

That's what I'm unsure about - only real way to tell would be to turn all the mobiles off, power cycle the SS, and then turn on the phones in a known order trying calls on each, and then see if the problem moves.
You could get a 2nd hand SS on eBay, they're usually around the £25 mark.

Being pedantic, I think you will find that using them would be illegal!!
Its a very quirky Law!!!
Although it is not illegal to sell or buy, it is illegal to use, without a Licence!
Vodafone can provide you one on the basis they are Licensed & you are using it under their Licence.

No more powerfull than a router wifi and they don't need a licence.
|
|

Not at all - as the device doesn't transmit until its linked to a valid vodafone account on the vodafone.co.uk website and each SS has a dedicated serial number.
So there is no problem selling them - vodafone know exactly which ones are in use and are in full control.
It not like those illegal GSM repeaters that are just transmitters.

I still think the unit is likely to be faulty but it's not worth £100 given your situation. It cannot be the network as the s3 works fine on it.
Perhaps the unit for whatever reason can only authenticate one device.
This is a strange case where odd things are happening, which honestly shouldn't be happening. I've always found in these odd type cases somethings faulty.

But operating in a different Band with different Licence requirements!
As I said, I was being pedantic - the chances of anyone noticing much be pretty small!

People have bought them to use abroad with their Vodafone accounts. That was illegal and Vodafone now have checks in place to try and ensure they are only used in the UK.

Perhaps the unit for whatever reason can only authenticate one device. My phone works fine, when I remove my wifes phone she gets the txt message confirming her phone has been removed. When I add hr phone she gets the txt saying she has been successfully added.
I'm wondering if it's something to do with the firmware on the Galaxy Y and the Galaxy mini2. Both phones have the latest firmware for them, but it isn't as up to date as my Galaxy S2.

Perhaps you are right here. I notice lots of issues on forums with people using these phones...

When you buy one of these 2nd hand, the previous user must have unregistered the unit from their account. The new user then logs into their mobile phone account on the Vodafone website and registers the unit on their account. Vodafone then activate the SS (probably automated, I can't see some poor sod doing it manually) and away you go.
You also have to registered the location of the SS, postcode, building numner, floor etc. so (asuuming you don't lie) there are several ways that Vodafone knows who has the SS, most obvious being the account the device is registered too. Vodafone didn't sell me mine and it's working fine. If this was illegal then I would have expected in the terms and conditions that Vodafone would require the SS to be return at the end of its life and not re-register them with a different person.

and they would have to rent them, and not sell them.
EE (Orange/T-Mobile) and Three and I think O2 have them, but only lend/rent them to people in bad coverage situations who have been valued customers (ie, monthly bills over £100 for a long time, generally).
These broadband femtocell's are a constant cost to keep secure.

I've put a laughing face on this as it is the only thing you can do at vodafone (utter pants company).
Right, I'm not a techie but have got so frustrated at vodafone sure signal. I've learnt how to get them to work.... MUCH BETTER than their useless support. So here is what you have to do:
1. Understand the port forwarding on the router (this may change for different routers..)
2. Understand the network mode of your phone.
3. Don't rely on support understanding their own system, they simply don't..
Answers:
1. Ports
So, below is a list of ports that you need to open on your router and make sure they are left open:
Port 8 opened on TCP UDP
Port 123 opened on TCP UDP
Port 50 opened on TCP UDP
Port 500 opened on TCP UDP
Port 4500 opened on TCP UDP
2. Network mode on phone.
Forget what Vodafone say, the phone can be on either GSM/WCDMA (AUTO MODE) OR ON WCDMA.
Sorry, I use a samsung S3, so on that phone this is where you find out where to change these setting easily (other phone, just google it)
These settings can be found in: Settings/more settings/mobile networks/network mode
3. if you don't know know to open ports on your router DO NOT ASK vodafone or your ISP, they do not want to get involved in changing settings... simply do what i did, google it and find some techie cone head (bless them, they are helpful though).. and follow their instructions.
I will happily help if you need any if I have the time.
I don't mind helping as I have wasted a week of my life fixing the frustrating sure signal boxes.... The boxes actually work well once you work out how to use them. It's just a pity that Vodafone are useless.
When i got mine and took it back to the shop, they admitted that all of their staff bought one and all didn't work... all!!!
I hope I helped.
