DG834G - Problem accessing Windows Update

Have just swopped a D-Link Modem for a Netgear DG834G on a friend's system with Waitrose as ISP. All went smoothly, but have discovered that IE won't access Microsoft Windows Update site, though Messenger works OK and other common websites are OK.

I have set MTU to 1500, upgraded Firmware to v5.01.09, but it still won't access MS Update. AVG 8 and Spyware Blaster are running.

Any ideas please?

change the MTU to 1478

Many thanks - Changed MTU to 1478 on Router (also on PC using Dr TCP). Rebooted PC and Windows Update still didn't work (site not accessible). I tried Microsoft Update which required an Active X Install, and this now seems to work. Not sure if it was the MTU change, but thanks.

might be, ms website dont like MTU of 1500 :\

Just tried again and there is a problem with MS Update site. I get the message IE can't access this site - same for Adaware update.

Any ideas?

I think you made that up. 1500 is the windows and ethernet defaults and never seems to cause problems with correctly configured ISPs and certainly not with the MS website.

Tried this morning and I can access both the Microsoft Update and Adaware update sites. Haven't really changed anything, but am going to leave it for the moment, as it's working and I don't have time to further investigate.
