BT Speedtester

[link to this post]

Just for information... BT have changed the speedtester, on the opening page you now have to select whether you are on an ADSL/FTTC connection or have FTTP... who says they don't cater for minorities? tongue

They also appear to have broken the Java recognition on Opera/Mac, but I suppose some things never change frown

I thought it was my PC and have just been checking the Java installation on FF. Obviously not!

I presume you get the message:
Java is not installed/enabled on your PC. To use the Performance Tester Java must be installed and enabled on your PC and Browser. To install latest version of Sun JRE, available for Windows, Linux, OS X, Solaris and other operating systems, click here.

That's the one... If I reload the page the message disappears, but it still won't let me run the test.

I've been through all the FAQ, but no indication how to report that it's broken. It doesn't work, therefore it's my fault mad mad mad

Fortunately it's fine on Safari.

In FF it is a case of wait 5 seconds and the message disappears ...

Start to run the test but after 30 seconds it comes back with a failure message. FAQ does not even work in FF.

But like you, it returns the failure message.

I can't believe even BT would break it on the most common browser around!!

Gotta be FTTC related... but I've no way of checking that.

It was working fine yesterday as the old version with no FTTC/FTTP split, so unlikely to be FTTC related.

I have just posted a comment on the BT Business forum and waiting to see what they say.

Except maybe for Mac users, which makes a change smile

O2 LLU ADSL2+, Vista with IE8 on a laptop with 15.4" 1280 x 800 screen it doesn't even show the FTTP box. It stops before the line under the FTTC one, with the horizontal scroll bar! I can of course scroll down to see the FTTP one but that isn't an obvious thing to do seeing as scrolling on that page is new.

However I can get to it rejecting the phone number, after it has gone through this message:-

"To use the Performance Tester, Java must be installed and enabled on your PC and Browser. If you are unable to see a message at the top of your screen that says "PERFORMANCE TESTER" then please go to FAQ section to troubleshoot." Presumably that means it reckons my Java is fine, or are you all getting that far.

Repeated test shows a flash of something red before the screen loads. Tried FF and your error message is clearly there for a fraction of a second before continuing.

I tried both IE 8 and Opera 11.01 but obviously I was within the hour so couldn't re-test. However, in both cases it said I didn't have Java installed and I was asked to 'click here' to install. I didn't click and both browsers did their usual things before the 'too soon to re-test' message appeared. In both cases it looked as if they would work but I'll have to wait for another 35 minutes before I can try again. It's unusual for my old slug of a computer to do anything properly so I'm amazed that BT Speedtester works for me, at least on Firefox.

It doesn't say much for the QA oversight of their updating procedures if something as basic as that can get through to a public-facing site. Especially as it's the one you have to use before they'll accept the possibility of a fault.

Makes you wonder what else they routinely miss.frown

I can't believe even BT would break it on the most common browser around!!

Gotta be FTTC related... but I've no way of checking that.
Could we not ping or tracert that cabinet - I you have an IP for it, we could?

Morning Bill. I find that the BT Speedtest will run in any of the browsers I have tried it with, but the initial page load just doesn't seem to go the whole way, but I still get to pick connection and put in my line number. It then goes on to start its check and gives me my downstream speed profile before I get an error. After that I reload the page and it works fine - for whatever reason confused

Hi Tom smile

I've pretty much always had problems with the BT tester on different browsers, but usually more clear-cut, it either runs without a hiccup or won't run at all!

Which browser works can be a bit of a moveable feast, it depends which bit they broke with the most recent modification.

I've seen a report that it's up to one of its old tricks again- on ADSL2+ it's returning a profile higher than the sync speed crazy

Sorry, but I've tried this several time this week with various Mac's, and get the standard error

Test Error
The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

Even tried a Windows 7 with IE 9 in an attempt to check my IP Profile.
