I see on the front page, that BT are increasing speed free of charge for people signing up from tomorrow.
If I ordered yesterday, but I don't have the engineer visit/go live until 17th April, am I likely to be offered this, or have I missed the party by 2 days?
Is it likely they would change my package if I asked after i signed up?
Thanks

A change of package will be possible if they put you on the older product speeds, would extend contract

Thanks for your reply.
I've agreed to an 18 month contract when I signed up yesterday. Do you think they would expect me to ign up for longer, or would they just keep me at 18 months?

If you have to use the form to get higher speeds, which is unlikely anyway imo, you have to agree to a new contract of the same length as your existing contract, starting on the day you get the upgrade.
So if you're in an 18-month contract tomorrow and request the upgrade, you will start a new 18-month contract.

Ok, thanks buddy.
I was just hoping I hadn't missed the faster speeds altogether by sining up a couple of days too early.

I would suggest letting the order simply progress as it is, and only try upgrading once it is up and running.
Order changes at this stage are what often cause system issues, i.e. people press wrong button or system was not tested for this combo

Ok, thanks. I'll do that.
The upload increase from 1mb to 10mb is most important for me as opposed to the download increase.
10mb is a great increase. 20 would be amazing, but I'm not really in a rush.
|
|
|

Don't forget they are 'up to' speeds and you almost certainly won't get the full amounts. For instance on my line the modem shows a max upload of 7.5 so I won't get higher than that upload on the 80/20 variants.

Yes, I realize that, but I think I'm close enough to get good speeds.
On ADSL2 at the moment I get 23/24mb down and 1/1.3 up, so I'm hoping i'll be towards the top end of the available speeds.

ADSL2 and FTTC speeds are totally unrelated, ADSL2 relies on the exchange line lengths and FTTC the lengths to the cabinet. You need to know what condition the cable is from cabinet to home and that distance too. Check the BT ADSL checker and it will tell you, it's now pretty accurate.

That is nice of them, maybe it is a good idea to get other towns fibre connected before mucking around with higher speeds.
Oh I forgot, Bt needs to make money so they got to make people think they are getting more for their money.
i wish there was another company that would put fibre down and knock Bt down a peg or 10

Following that line of thought we would still have 0.5Meg since there are exchanges that don't offer that
Openreach is charging more for 80/20 which means it makes more money, which means chances of improvements to rollout are perhaps higher

So following your line of thought, higher speed mean more money mean more chances of improvements to roll out to ADSl , it did not really work.
Many places still don't have ADSL.
our exchange is suppose to be fibre enabled around June this year, if I had a slightly higher speed than I do now I would not even consider it and even now with my measly 4Meg speed, I still not sure if I really want that sort of speed. i know that what I got now is reliable, something that as yet have not been proven with BT fibre service, not enough people on it to test reliability. It also took me a long time to get off the BT network broadband wise, so do I really want to go back onto their network?
I prefer Bt to just disappear, but that is not going to happen.

i find that post very puzzling as your post would make sense if he was only getting less then 0.1-10mb maybe higher (not really sure what speeds i could put in as low as i only ever see 5 or less)
but the point is if he is getting 23mb on ADSL2 he must live next door the the exchange with band new phone cabling as the lock is very high for an ADSL2 line (if not nearly impossible for ADSL2) so likely chance he can get close to 40 and 80/100 speeds is high as i seen 3 houses that was not close to the cab (not within viewing distance from house) and still got 35-40mb speeds (not seen an 80mb customer yet)
what did the site say you was going to get when you singed up BT (@greatcap)
like others have posted they just reset the contract to 18 months not add 18 months

As Openreach dont do ADSL that argument is mute. Openreach has a different pricing policy, more speed costs more.
BT Wholesale went for more usage costs more, the ports cost the same no matter what speed.
25 exchanges no ADSL. 21 of those have a wireless service instead.
More properties don't have mains gas or mains sewage than dont have access to ADSL

FYI the upgrade is now available to order:
Just select the 'Upgrade my speed' option against the required package.
I have just completed the request and have an estimated activation date of Friday 13th April.

What a joke !!!!
We're sorry but you cannot reorder Line Rental Saver until 27 days before the end of your original term. We will send you an email to let you know when you can reorder.

Yup, upgrade form now available but don't get too excited if you also paid for line-saver on your phone line as this seems to be causing an error for me and others on another forum.
Shouldn't make a difference as they are separate contracts but BT's very poor on-line system (poor in my experience anyway) doesn't seem able to cope with it.

Quick and easy and should be changed over between 1-4am tomorrow. Sweeet

Thanks for that.
I get this:
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 62.6Mbps and upstream line speed of 20Mbps.

Thanks.
I think I'll leave mine until the initial Infinity is installed & running, then I'll try the upgrade.
I don't want it to go wrong before my installation date of Tues 17th April.

Can also confirm that if they estimate your line at below 38Mb on the checker then you cannot continue with the order as you already have the fastest available.. Makes sense but there will be some who can get above 40Mb with estimates below that...
EDIT.... This is for the 78Mb product... Those on 2Mb upload should be ok..

EDIT.... This is for the 78Mb product... Those on 2Mb upload should be ok.. That sounds dramatic . They are a pain. Is that from a system message, or an email from a sales person?
You might find that some of the other ISPs will do it, like they did for the 5Mbps one before BT Retail did.

From a system message this morning. Don't think i will pursue it though seen as the highest attainable I have ever seen for my line is 42Mb. I do know others who have 55Mb - 60Mb attainable but the checker gives 37Mb so those could be a little peeved...

Hmmm its going to be a long 24 hours wait,
WBC says I can get 27 down 5 up, I currently get 35 down and 9 up (my profile is set to 35).
Have ordered the upgrade anyway so once the Cap if off will the BT DLM try to sync at a higher rate or will it still sync at what the profile is set to ? If it see too many errors when the cap is taken off will it lower the speed ?
|
|
|
The line checker gives me 66.8Mb - my modem shows over 100Mb for attainable rate.

Hi Anonymous,
There have been a few problems with customer trying to upgrade that have line rental saver. We are looking into this. If you send me in your details using http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4950 I'll see what can be done.
Cheers

out of interest how long does the upgrade take? i signed up for it yesterday but forgot to look to see a completion date.

Check your order on bt.com, it should say. I ordered mine yesterday morning at it happened just after midnight.

Hi Ma9mwah,
The order can take up to 3 days to complete. I hope you'll enjoy your new faster speeds
Cheers

Having looked at "My packages" on the BT website, It's actually showing me as having ordered BT Infinity 2 with:
Your package includes:
Up to 76Mb download speed
Up to 19Mb upload speed
Advanced security software
Parental controls
Unlimited WiFi minutes
24/7 support
So, depending on how I sync with the cabinet, I should get the faster speeds without having to ask them for it.

Hi,
I think my has been done as my router is reporting
| Text | 1
23
4 | Downstream Upstream
Attainable rate (kbit/s) 88092 34157SNR margin (dB) 8.3 14.9
Line rate (kbit/s) 79999 20000 |
yet when i go onto the http://speedtester.bt.com/ site it only reports
IP Profile for your line is - 38.72 Mbps
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
has the upgrade not gone though properly or does the IP profile take time? speeds tests indicated i'm getting ~40/20
|
|
|
If you disconnect and reconnect your session (or reboot the router, not the modem) the IP profile should update immediately.
Edit: From your posting it looks like you may not be using the Openreach modem, so rebooting the router and not the modem may not be possible. What are you using?

OK, I didn't immediately recognise the format. So have you reconnected and got a new IP profile?
